Man arrested for burning kitten on grill July 16, 2002 Posted: 4:03 PM EDT (2003 GMT)
A neighborhood friend of Sherry Scott holds the kitten they named 'Lucky,' in a recent handout photo.
LIBERTY, Missouri (AP) -- A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning a kitten on a barbecue grill as several other people stood around and watched in amusement.
A witness pulled the scorched, 7-week-old tabby from the hot coals, but it was severely injured and had to be put to death, police said.
"They kept saying, `Meow, meow,' and they were poking at it with a stick," said Sherry Scott, who burned her hand grabbing the kitten.
Charles C. Benoit, 24, was charged with animal abuse, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He was jailed on $10,000 bail.
Jim Roberts, spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor's office, said he does not expect anyone else to be charged, because no witnesses could identify the others.
Scott said that on Friday night, she saw 10 or 12 people at the barbecue grill in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lives. Scott said she asked what they were cooking, and they said it was a cat. She said the group taunted her, daring her to rescue the cat.
She said the group scattered when she threatened to call police. She said she pulled the kitten from where it had been shoved into the coals at the back of the grill. Its tail, whiskers, fur, eyes and throat were scorched.
"I called him Lucky because I thought I got him out of there just in time," she said.
Scott said she and other residents stayed up Friday night trying to nurse the kitten with an eye dropper of milk. But animal control officers decided that because of its respiratory injuries and inability to swallow food, it had to be destroyed.
"If you would have seen him, you would have cried," said Sheri Simpson, one of the residents who helped care for the kitten.

As long as you don't condone the torture of animals, we should get along fine. Good, I don't condone cat juggling much less grilling them. I did keep up with the thread until I had to bury my dog, but not too well afterwards. Keep freeping.

Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
>>So, the Bible says that only humans may have souls then?<<
No, it says that only Humans are the dwelling place of the Spirit. Soul is sort of a generic catch all phrase to mean a living thing. When referring to humans, many do use the two words interchangeably, however, as I was caught doing at the beginning of this thread.

Thanks for the logical debate.
BTW, what do you mean when you quote Proverbs 14:12?

Rob Roy:
I want to thank you and others for taking the baton. I must admit I was saying some stuff in the beginning in the spirit of Rush Limbaughs "talent on loan from God." That is, I knew I would be missunderstood and, therefore, cause some strong emotions even though I was trying to be very accurate in what I said. I was shocked, however, at the hornets nest I stirred up. I must admit I just got tired of the unbridled emotional responses.
,,, this is the first comment I've responded to on arrival at my desk. Reading thru this compilation of sentiments and suggested remedies I can see it's a cross between a condolence register and a code of practice for a lynching mob.
The clear thinkers who have steered clear of the emotive on display melodrama, chose to isolate the real issue straight away - Benoit is a potential Geoffrey Dahmer.
Ethically, Benoit is wrong. Legally, he will have to account for the unimaginable wrong he's done too. Part of the end value in my opinion lies in knowing what an experienced clinician can uncover within a series of structured introspections. No doubt, the root of his actions is event based. The blame lies with him but within a clinical context, he may not be to blame. That's not absolving him in an ethical or legal sense - it would be interesting to know more, that's what I'm saying.
On the surface, he won't be on anyone's preferred list of babysitters and BBQs for some people will never be quite the same again. A very sad story.

Sorry, it was a little out of context. It is one of my favorite scriptures because it reminds me that Just because I "feel" something is the right path, that doesn't mean it is. I am responsible to make an intelligent, informed decision and I need to be wary of doing what just naturally seems right.
I also believe it refers to the idea of being good to receive your eternal reward. The Christian story makes no sense to the natural man. That is, that God came to earth in the flesh to die as a perfect sacrifice and atonement for the sins which were keeping me from an eternal relationship with him.
This makes me his hier. Which means I am no longer seeking to be good to earn anything. I do it because I love my Father and want to please Him, not because I am afraid I better do it or else...
And yes, the LOGICAL debate is a lot of fun, thanks! With every post we are sharpening each other.

Oh gracious goodness, I don't and wouldn't assume that. I knew some of you guys when I worked at Wpnsta Chasn. All of us (females) in Ordnance, just loved you guys. Y'all were the best looking and the nicest guys on base next to the Marines. I have the utmost respect for all of the EOD people - as everyone should - y'all have a hard job.
It wasn't meant to be a lecture, I'm sorry if you took it that way.

I am not sure the state is big enough for the both of us, however, I would never slap your face :-)
I think I am unable to make you see that I didn't disagree with your right to make your point, just that I truly believe that you picked the WRONG time to do it.
To further explain, see the breaking news post about how the "found body is Samantha". You will read very early on someone's callous remarks. The remarks themselves really DO hold water.
Even so, of course they have NO PLACE in that thread. It is all about timing if you are really trying to promote an understanding of you point vs. "REACTION" which generally only causes people to dig their heals in.

Points taken and some I agree with. BTW, who is Samantha? Is this a local story?

Hello Askel, it is, I just couldn't sleep until daylight though!
I know that belief will get me in trouble or at least give me an ulcer. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness... ideas, ideals, idealism, naivety - at my age, you would think I was past it - ready to except that mankind will do ANYTHING in its pursuit of happiness/pleasure - I can't be that cynical. Oh well, just rambling Askel.

No not local. Found dead girl was 5 years old.
See comments by andy_card.. I think his comments begin in post #4. And I agree that some of these cases are sensationalized(sp?). But he picked a bad time to point this out. Also, I know this is not the same,at all, as an animal.
My point was only about timing. Thank you for listening (reading).

I agree. But even cars have a personality, depending on how they were built and maintained. No, not really. We sometimes describe a car as having a certain personality, but a car is an inanimate object, and therefore no more capable of having a personality than your underwear.

Jefferey Dahmer made no death row conversion. He was never on death row, hence impossible for him to make a death row conversion. Dahmer was sentenced to 15 life terms in prison in 1992 and a fellow prisoner beat him to death with a lead pipe in 1994.
To: maxwell
I thought he made a huge (and controversial) deathrow conversion statement as well... Q: What happens when you show up late for dinner at Jeffrey Dahmer's apt?
A: He gives you the cold shoulder.

Not to worry. Pukes like "Brainless in Seattle" RobRoy are not bright enough to maintain their anonymity for long and eventually shoot off their yaps in front of the wrong person.
Such sociopaths are destined for a well-deserved "payday" and surely will get theirs without you or I ever having to lift a finger - other than the middle one........

I read your mind and I'll help you:) I have 9 kitties and they are all different in personality and emotions. I would hurt somebody severly if they messed with my cats or any other cat that was in my proximity.
