I take it back. The new USS New York will not be a carrier but rather an amphibious assault ship, carrying 800 mean Marines and all their tools of death.
It WILL be named in honor of 9/11 and WILL have steel from the World Trade Towers incorporated into it's hull.
I hope they finish it in time for it to do some business in the Land of the Raghead Wastes.

The next Carrier will be USS New York, and it will have steel from the Trade Center Towers incorporated into its hull. The next carrier will be named USS George H.W. Bush. The Navy announced that on December 9 and here is the press release. That guarantees that some future Democrat administration will somedaye be announcing a carrier named USS William Clinton. Mark my words.

Thanks much for the post, it's very informative. It looks like IT is king in tackling very complicated and massive jobs.

I believe Mr. Beamer should be posthumously commissioned in the Unorganized Militia of the United States so that he can be awarded the Medal of Honor. Bad idea. He's received the Medal of Freedom, and quite deservedly so. But the Medal of Honor would be a grave dishonor to every previous recipient.

In an emergency of extreme nature, how many "retired", decommissioned old carriers/museums could be activated, floated, or even towed in order to maintain some level of sea power, say if our 12 current carriers were out of action?
To: LibKill
Impressive. And I hope it scares the poo out of our enemies.
If it doesn't, if necessary we have ways of self fulfilling our prophecies, if you get what I mean.

"That guarantees that some future Democrat administration will somedaye be announcing a carrier named USS William Clinton. Mark my words."One problem with naming a U.S. ship "Clinton" is that Admiral Clinton was our British enemy who fought against George Washington in the late 1700's.

>> But the Medal of Honor would be a grave dishonor to every previous recipient<<
I understand that you do not agree with my suggestion, but a grave dishonor?
That I do not understand.
Mr.Beamer, acting with unusual perspicacity and initiative, used his cellular telephone to ascertain enemy intentions, which were not obvious. Then, he made a decision to attack enemy forces to prevent the deaths of innocent civilians unknown to him personally, with no regard to the likely death of himself or the other American forces following his lead.
I do not think that any recognition that his heroic actions might receive could possibly constitute a "grave dishonor" to anyone.
To: Jim Noble
Please don't misunderstand, I certainly don't want to diminish what Beamer, Bingham, Burnett, and Glick did. I consider them true heroes in every sense of the word. But I strongly feel that the Medal of Honor should be reserved for uniformed personnel only, with no exceptions. The screening process that Medal recipients go through is intensive, and many recipients wait years (if not decades) to receive the award. Countless men have performed great acts of heroism on the field of battle and never received the Medal, even though they are probably deserving.

"...a nuke mine anchored on the bottom could be remotely detonated sinking any ship near the burst." And convince the entire world that they're nucking futs. The problem with ocean mines is proving who put it there.

It's the most technologically challenging, toughest-to-manufacture product. It delivers
more striking power than the combined navy and air forces of most nations.
And we let a crew with an average age of (IIRC) something like 21 years run it.
Well, all I can say is they are a great bunch of kids, er, young, mature,
responsible, and wise-beyond-their-years adults.

One problem with naming a U.S. ship "Clinton" is that Admiral Clinton was our British enemy who fought against George Washington in the late 1700's. On the other hand you have DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York and proponent of the Erie Canal.
To: Non-Sequitur
You still have the same problem (some governor with the same name hardly changes that fact). Admiral Clinton fought against George Washington; not exactly a badge of honor for naming a ship.
To: SauronOfMordor
The problem with ocean mines is proving who put it there. The yield required for a deep-ocean mine to have lethal effects through 10,000+ feet of seawater would rule out all but a few nations--actually, it would narrow it down to two, because we can rule out the US in this scenario. Russia and China. Russia would not be overly pleased to see China gain hegemonic status in the Far East, because the ChiComs might start getting ambitious re: Siberia. That leaves China.
