GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) -- Using metal barricades, police separated protesters, including NAACP members and a David Duke-founded group, that clashed over a newly resurrected Confederate flag display on Saturday.
Eugene Bryant, the Mississippi president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told about 40 anti-flag protesters the debate should move to the negotiating table.
"We would rather negotiate than demonstrate," he said.
Harrison County supervisors on Tuesday returned the Confederate flag to an eight-flag beachfront display representing the governments that have ruled here since 1699.
Supervisors took the flag down two years ago amid protests and flag thefts, but officials voted in May to put it back up.
On Saturday, flag supporters and opponents dueled on the beach with signs, flag displays and words.
Bryant said Coast NAACP chapters will arrange meetings with business and religious leaders to urge supervisors to remove the Confederate flag.
About five members of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization joined some 20 pro-flag demonstrators. EURO is affiliated with former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
Vincent Breeding of New Orleans, EURO's national director, said anti-flag protesters were trying to "intimidate" county officials into taking the flag down.
Bryant used fiery rhetoric to denounce flag supporters.
"At a time when this nation should be united, some members of the Harrison County Board of Supervisors seem to be united in pushing the agenda of the Ku Klux Klan -- hate, racism and division," Bryant said.
David Marney of New Orleans said a friend from Bay St. Louis has been sending him newspaper clippings about the flag controversy.
"It's a ridiculous thing to be fighting over," Marney said. "This is helping Mississippi and the Coast keep a really bad image."

Some years ago there was a local chapter of the kkkoneheads in my hometown. (I was elsewhere, in the Corps).
The Boy Scouts of America purchased a bankrupt swimming pool. They then made it a training ground for boy scouts, including Black boy scouts.
The KKKoneheads ran off (intimidated) the local boy scout lifeguards. The whole operation was about to be shut down.
My father heard about this. He told my brothers "Lads, you now have summer jobs."
A representative of the kkkoneheads came around to remonstrate with my father.
He heard the bigot out and then said;
My boys will work at that pool all summer.
If you want to plant a burning cross on my lawn I will light it with my shotgun.
And if a hair of my boy's head is touched I will wipe you out.
My family never heard from the KKK again.
And the local chapter of pinhead degenerates has been out of business for more than 20 years.
Of course, cowards like masks.
You implied you thought differently about 4 posts up. Or maybe you just thought I was an easy target seeing as I'm Southern and support the flying of the Confederate flag.
FWIW, I support the right of anyone to free expression as long as it doesn't harm others.
And FWIW, the Confederacy was just the Klan without the masks.

This is exactly what the racist NAACP wants to do, negotiate. As if they have any moral or lawful ground to stand on has already been assumed by those educated in government propaganda centers we call public education. This is exactly how they took down the Southern banner in SC and began the push in GA. I would highly recommend to my Southern brethren in MS not to give one inch, not to even consider negotiation because if they do, then the racist NAACP has already won

Slavery was part of it, but there was a hell of a lot more involved. Slavery would never have lasted in the CSA anyway - too many people were against it. In fact, that was the main reason England did not give the South aid.
And if you're getting your truth from movies made in 1915 versus the actual statements and actions of the men that were involved in the destruction of the South, I can't say there's much help for you. You're already living in fantasylan
