I share your uneasiness in the "re-definition" of the word terrorist. Of course it's terrorism. Maybe it's
domestic terrorism, but it's still terrorism. Then again, I don't have the responsibility of making sure the public doesn't go into hysteria over every little news story yet balancing it so they know when there's an authentic threat, and I'm sure my perspective would be different from there...still...terrorism is terrorism.

I've never been to DC and know virtually nothing about its' local laws. Are guns legal there? Do they allow CCLs? DC has the most restrictive gun laws in the country - making it one of the most unsafe cities in the nation. Notice that the two counties in VA, where we have shall issue gun laws, directly across the river from DC had a combined 6 murders while the two counties on the Maryland side with restrictive, but not quite as bad as DC's, gun laws have had 75 so far this year. Gun control laws at work.

Terrorism has the purpose of inciting terror beyond the act, for political motive. It has a perceived political value.

That's what I thought. Reality is smacking liberals in the face and they simply refuse to acknowledge it.

Fox just broke it. Looks like a targeted attack on someone "high up in the financial world" (rather, his son, who was in the car). Dunno. Still watching.

"If the suspect in this turns out to be an Egyptian national with suspect ties to the Islamic Jihad, will they still deny it as "terrorism"?"Why haven't we heard it is likely a "white supremist" yet?

Thanks!

I wish FReepers would have the same concern about us California FReepers when there's a report of an earthquake or some such thing on in our state. It's like the Sodom and Gomorrah story. We know there's only about 5 decent people in the state (FReepers all, I'd be willing to bet) so we're pretty much ready to heave a sigh and toss the lit match. We wish you guys would move outta there so we can just go ahead and write it off.

We'd do the same for Calfornians if a massive earthquake (God forbid) or something terrible happened. Come on, you know that. :) Well, maybe. But my father would roll over in his grave if he knew I helped B. Boxer in any way.

Well, maybe. But my father would roll over in his grave if he knew I helped B. Boxer in any way. God, I remember voting in CA when I lived there...what a depressing experience...needless to say, there were a couple of write-ins on my ballot. :-)
--KL
P.S. No maybe; we'd help Cali out in a second, you can't doubt that. Don't doubt that. That's TOO cynical...even for *me*. ;-)

Which explains why the name has not been released.
The DC police at work protecting the elite once more.
Sounds to me like somebody's got an axe to grind because they lost money in the markets. The guy's father is someone high up in the financial world. Poor kid took Dad's car and got hurt.
Remember back when the tech stocks first started tanking. The day-trader(s) that shot up the brokerage firm(s)? I do. We installed security doors then in our office. I only have to swipe my card four times to go to the bathroom now...

Hope the guy will be ok. Something about that "burned from the waist down part"....I'm not a man, but I automatically shudder in sympathy.According to Richard Prior, the really important parts have their own sprinkler system...

I guess the posts on this thread have died down. Around 6:15 PM, I finally heard WMAL announce all the details that have dribbled out above. It was a young man, starting a car he'd borrowed. It's now been identified as a pipe bomb but we're not supposed to think that this was an act of terrorism. This denial of terrorism baffles me. What else can a pipe bomb be?
The young man is in surgery in critical condition.
The last I heard around 8 PM was that Wisconsin Ave had been reopened, that no other suspicious items were found in the area, and the police investigation continues.
On the subject of sympathy for Californians, I want to apologize for the thoughtless postings following your appeal for consideration. Unfortunately, the impression of California is that they are ALL Democrats, ALL Hollywood types, and more generalities of that ilk. Generalities are dangerous whenever they are applied and this is no exception. Of course there are Republicans in CA. Of course there are valued friends and FReepers. Is there a FReeper who doesn't know where Jim Robinson lives? I sure hope not.
BTW, good luck with the tailgate party this weekend. Those of us who have followed your activity will be anxiously awaiting your report and PHOTOS! Thanks for your faithfulness, your willingness to go out in 105 heat and protest the protesters. God bless.
