That letter sounds so much like a made up deal to me. Why would Ed not report it to the police first instead of the media?

Hey Bella.... new day, new speculation. What's your take at this point in time?

The letter was faxed to the police before he mentioned it in the 12 noon conference. My guess is that the police may have clued him in on what to look for in the letters he receives. Chances are he may have felt that it was a hoax letter and the police had not checked the fax machine or had not had time to review it yet. I think he brought it up yesterday to get a point across to the kidnapper... that the real kidnapper can use may ways to reach the family (the phone numbers, by mail, etc...) But at the end of the conference Ed Smart kinda blew his whole point by answering a reporters question, in which he responded something to the affect that he wants to see the kidnapper caught a charge to the fullest extent. Now as it stands both the Smart Family & the Police/FBI feel that the letter is not from the true kidnapper or someone who is connected to the kidnapper. I also think that Ed Smart released information about this letter to bring the story back into the media limelight. It looks like it worked as many news type programs picked up the story or devoted their whole show to the letter and the Smart case on Wednesday night.

What do you mean by "made up deal"?

That the letter was mailed to the Smart family but it is a hoax letter? or that the Smart family made up that this letter really exists?

I think the letter exists but that it was mailed by someone that has no real connection to the kidnapping or kidnapper, but then I thought what if it was Ricci's wife that sent it in... just to test the water (that is if she has some part in it with her husband)

You mentioned the other boards... I have no idea where they are. do you have links that your willing to share (you can FRmail them to me if you like) . I just want to read them to see what other people are thinking. Are they thinking that the letter does not exist or that the letter was sent but is a hoax on these other boards?

I'd like to see this investigation come up with the facts & truth, keep the media away instead of providing disinformation & spinning the stories, and keep the extended family off the news since they admitted they really don't know much since it's becoming a circus. The authorities should be updating the parents, and take a good look at what they have already for their perp. There's a lot of unanswered questions and oddities. And, it's time for the authorities to talk to the sister without the parents present. It's time for the real kidnapper to pay his dues.

I don't think the Smart family made up the letter. Some fool made it up and Ed used it to feed new interest into the case even though he knows its not credible. He's just desperate and who can blame him? The only thing that bothers me is why he said the police knew about the letter when he obviously didn't even discuss it with them before the news conference.

SO true..when the police heard about the conference, they went over and talked w/ Ed alone. What bothers me is how he said he wanted his dgt back, then said he wants justice done..Can you imagine the perp listening to this? He's thinking twice. Just hope this guy does some soul- searching.

That's been bothering me ever since I heard it. I have this sinking feeling that even if she's alive, that statement will keep her abductor away indefinitely.

No I doubt it... I think Ed Smart is thinking he coming to the end of the media rope. I don't think Ed Samrt cares what people think about him, I think he wants his daughter back. I also think he stressed out and is running on empty.

I also know that he did blow it with the kidnapper if the kidnapper is thinking he may get away with this if he works with the family. But the truth is who ever did this will face charges no matter what, no matter what the family says, no matter what the family promises. The kidnapper knows this. If Elizabeth is alive still, the best thing the kidnapper can do is take her somewhere a drop her off and run like hell.

Unfortunately these charges that are coming down of larceny in the Smart house, burglary of another house, and bank robbery are lightweight compared to accessory to childnapping, possible accessory to murder of a child, and being a stool pigeon. If he were to tell the police the truth he wouldn't last 6 weeks in jail so there is not a snowball's chance in Hades he will give any more of what he knows to authorities. It's too bad in cases like this we can't turn him over to one of our War on Terror allies like Pakistan or Saudi Arabia to work the truth out of him.
