I don't think the Smart family made up the letter. Some fool made it up and Ed used it to feed new interest into the case even though he knows its not credible. He's just desperate and who can blame him? The only thing that bothers me is why he said the police knew about the letter when he obviously didn't even discuss it with them before the news conference.

SO true..when the police heard about the conference, they went over and talked w/ Ed alone. What bothers me is how he said he wanted his dgt back, then said he wants justice done..Can you imagine the perp listening to this? He's thinking twice. Just hope this guy does some soul- searching.

I didn't see the interview, but was it really clear that the police didn't know about the letter already? Could it be that they just didn't know Mr. Smart was planning to make it public against their advice?
