"But from the way the house is set up, their room is closer to the stairs. If they\she saw the perp actually coming up the steps or about to do that, he'd be at the top before they made it to the parent's room. In addition, it could be they\she thought by pretending to sleep, he'd pass them by. "

If they saw a burglar I would think they would have locked their bedroom door and called the police. Many bedroom doors have locks and most 14 year olds have a phone in the bedroom. But this is conjecture.

Another thing when MK went back to bed after catching a glimpse of the man again, why didn't she use the bedroom phone? Has anyone heard whether there was one in the girl's room? I think this would be an important detail.

That has been my theory all along since the perp remained in the house for awhile after he threatened Liz.

With all due respect, I cannot imagine a burglar ransacking a house for loot with a kidnapped kid in tow. That just defies credibility.

Ricci Lover??? - That is a pretty strong thing to say! - Ricci is no doubt an ugly person, but the cops still have to link him to the kidnapping if he did do it. It is still up in the air and he just happens to be the best one that fits the MO, but that does not mean that cops have the right guy. I refuse to close my mind to the fact that Ricci is the one who did this until they get some hard evidence against him.

God bless you, Brigitte, for this rational, sane reply to a disruptor.

That's just B.S. and completely unwarranted!!!

I agree with you on this one, JG

Sherlock signed up 2002-06-29.

OMG, no wonder. Varina & Bella, you two super sleuths are correct. Ricci's lawyer was just on Greta and said Ricci had nothing to do with it, I stand corrected.

"Ricci faces one count of theft for allegedly stealing $3,500 worth of items from the Smarts' home in June 6, 2001."

Is it just an eerie coincidence that Ricci stole from the Smarts on June 6, *2001*, and Liz was abducted on June 5, *2002*?

I can't think of any reason for there to be a link, can you?

Trying to control a 5'6" teenager? Was she giving him a hard time, did she make any noise? NO--if she did, other family members would have heard something taking place. Plus, he gave her time to get her shoes..

Since there wasn't any noise, was she tiptoeing through the house to leave? If she was, then she knew the guy & was sneaking out.

Key witness statement: she was asked/told to get her shoes.

I am truly getting exhausted with the SLC PD Chief.. I just want to scream.. stop talking, get out of the suit, go do some real work and get this child home!!!..

Betti, good post. It could the SLCPD has backed away a bit so the family can work out the logistics related to the alleged kidnapping. They may believe it's an "inside job." so to speak, involving, if not a relative, then someone known to the family.

Regarding the discussion of what MK witnessed during the alleged abduction.......I see a huge part of the picture missing.

To my knowledge, there has been no mention of how MK described Elizabeth's behavior during the event. What did Elizabeth's emotional reaction appear to be? Fear? Silent resignation? Robotic compliance? Did Elizabeth utter anything upon being awakened by a strange man? Did she appear confused or frightened by what was happening? Did she say anything at all to MK or to the abductor? Did she question what was happening to her? Was there any hesitance at all in following the instructions given to her? None of this information has been made public, but you can bet the police have sought the answers to these and other questions. I'm sure the police have good reason for keeping the details of the actual abduction scenario private. Remember, Dinse did say that they had gotten "a tremendous amount of information" from MK......I'm sure their interviews with her have revealed far more than we have been told.

The perp had a gun. I bet Liz didn't make noise and went with him because she was afraid he would shoot her sister, and perhaps the rest of her family.

I was held at gunpoint many years ago. The man who abducted me took me to a public place and told me if I did not act natural, he would shoot the people there. I obeyed because I was not willing to take the risk.

I'd bet the south 40 on it.

I rarely post, but something is really bothering me: why is it that we can't seem to solve crimes quicker and easier?

My take is that society has sunk to such low levels, that perps do these things because they are accustomed to getting away with it - ALL THEIR MISERABLE LIVES. We are to blame, because we are so obsessed with being politically correct and not being judgemental that we typically look the other way and don't get involved. I, for one, get involved - passionately. (Most of the other FReepers on this thread will attest to this.)

Let me give you an example. About a year ago I went to a movie with some friends and selected seats mid-theater. Four young women came in and sat near the front. They talked loudly through all of the trailers, which I quitely tolerated. Then the movie started and they continued to talk loudly. We had a theater full of people and no one said a word. My equally loud one liner was something to the effect "If you continue talking, I will get the manager and have you thrown out." Never heard a word after that.

My point is very simple. WE are responsible for the society we have and better start fixing it at every opportunity. Now I'll get off my soapbox.

Ricci faces one count of theft for allegedly stealing $3,500 worth of items from the Smarts' home in June 6, 2001. A search of Ricci's home on June 19, turned up jewelry, a perfume bottle and a wine glass filled with sea shells that belonged to the Smarts, according to charging documents.

The wine glass filled with sea shells is a very strange thing to steal. I wonder if it had some sort of sentimental value to Elizabeth?

Atkinson said the picture remained hard to decipher, but a portion or two might shed light on the model of at least one of the vehicles.

It's to my understanding that they're unable to enhance the license plate numbers. :-(

Wouldn't surprise me if these cars were involved in a drug buy or a meeting place for someone having an affair.

Your best post to date, JG. I agree that the societal disrupters among us count on the sheeple to be so intimidated they won't protest bad behavior.

Family members interviewed by Hannity & Colmes say in spite of Ricci's release through his attorney that he is cooperating with police in the investigation, LE has told Elizabeth's parents that Ricci is not cooperating.

Again, these family members should stay away from the media and only the parents be interviewed due to all the misinformation.

If the extended family likes being on tv, they should go on a gameshow like Neleh from Utah on Survivor, who now works for one of the news stations. Wasn't she also from SLC area?

If the extended family likes being on tv

IMHO, none of them seem to be enjoying this experience.
