The professional life of Rod Steiger, 77, who died yesterday, brings back admiring memories for the editor of this page. Working as a child actor in Hollywood in 1956, he had occasion to play the son to Rod Steiger's mobster/father in the Humphrey Bogart movie "The Harder They Fall." Mr. Steiger, who the world already recognized back then as one of the finest American actors, also turned out to be an unexpectedly considerate colleague to an inconsequential 8-year-old actor. Unlike most stars

He was really good as Pontius Pilate in "Jesus of Nazareth". Hope he's in a good place.

For any who may not know, the author of this editorial is Tony Blankley of The McLaughlin Group, and now editor of the Washington Times. As far as I know, he made only one other acting appearance, apart from the 1982 McLaughlin Group in which he played himself, and that was in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents in 1955.

Rod Stieger once described how he wanted to kill himself during his depressions, holding on to a small boat over the side and use a gun. He suffered a great deal, but overcame. So glad he never did it. He is happier now.

You too? I thought he did such a great job with that role, short as it was. He made Pontius Pilate seem very human and realistic.
