If it were one of my son's that died, buying a new house and car at this time during a trial would be farthest from my mind. How does someone with no visable means of support get such a house and car?

Nope. It would have been QUITE OBVIOUS within a few days after contact with poison oak. And one cannot hide something like that. Especially with the police going over one with a fine tooth comb.
