THE RANT: Just when did our daughters start dressing like hookers?

I think the cycle will only turn when young people (and older people) come to the stunning and entirely original conclusion that slutty does *not* mean the same thing as sexy. A well-fit pair of jeans, t-shirt and sneakers leave little doubt as to the infrastructure, without shamelessly hawking one's wares. Same with a nice dress. Who wants to see little Madonna clones trying to outzip one another in tacky public display? Certainly not Moi. That's just not sexy.

I am a Gen X'er (33 years old). Despite the "slacker" label on Gen X'ers, they are also firm believers in individual responsibility and are extremely entrepreneurial. These beliefs manifest themselves in things like having the highest savings rate of any generation and the group most desirous of provatizing Social Security.

What this country has been sorely missing is acceptance of individual responsibility. If what I am seeing in my generation, coupled with facts on the habits, etc., things will change. Will they be fixed? No. Will they move in the right direction? I think so.

BTW, I'm all in favor of decriminalizing drugs, despite never consuming them, but that's a whole other issue...:-)

"Otherwise, there's always an "entaglement," like it or not."

Nothing permanent. Even those women who went to Alaska to find men to marry them couldn't find a sucker even there.

And don't forget the frosty blue eyeshadow! I even had royal-blue mascara that made me look like I'd been under a blue blanket for a few hours.

My Glorias were so tight, I had to lie down on the bed and zip 'em with a wire hanger - just like in Dazed and Confused. You could have hung towels off my hipbones. (Ah, to be young and wiry.)

I found myself thinking the same thing myself today. I went to the bank and there behind the counter was a young clerk in her early twenties in a "skort" just a few inches below her hips in length and a "little" sweater that clung to her ever so tightly and rested an inch above the waist of her "skort", revealing her bare tummy. She was also wearing a pair of thongs. In a small town bank!! I'm no prude but I was truly shocked. It was so unprofessional.

Eye of the beholder.

I work in a very conservative culture yet some of our best programmers ahve long hair and eyelid rings. Doesn't necessarily correlate to bad moral judgement.

The problems are more than just how they dress. Dress is only one symptom of our hedonistic society.

"What this country has been sorely missing is acceptance of individual responsibility."

What is missing as well are standards and a fixed sense of right and wrong.

The worst thing about girls dressing like this is that it's terribly unfair to the young men.

If a girl walks around exposing her tits to the world, obviously guys are going to notice it. If a guys words or actions imply that he would like to fondle the girls breasts, she can sue him for sexual harrassment, and scream, "What kind of girl do you think I am?!"

The young woman will go through life dressed as a slut and thinking that men are pigs. The young man will go through life confused until he meets a nice girl with some self respect.

Reminds me of the joke women tell each other, "where are all the nice guys gone to." The new joke men tell their buddies is "have you seen a lady I can be proud to be with in public?"

I do a lot of work with youth in the Scouts, and I'd echo the posters here who say that the main problem is parents who want to be their kids' friend, not their kids' parents. They're afraid to say "NO" to their kids, afraid to have their kids be angry with them. They don't have the guts to cut their kids off when they start to whine and wheedle.

You don't have to beat your kid to get them to understand who's boss. A couple of years ago, we were having a problem with my son. We finally just shut off everything for him. No money (except for school lunch), no overnights at his friends, no access to the computer except for school work, NO TV, NO TV, NO TV, NO TV (which meant that I couldn't watch TV at times -- that's when he really knew I was serious). Nothing buy Scouts, school, and sports, and we let him know that sports were hanging by a thread. After 4 months of this, he finally figured out we meant it. Grades came back up.

If you look like Brad Pitt they are everywhere. If you look like me (average) then the answer is "somewhere else".

Since Pretty Woman?

Actually, I think the WSJ had an article some 20years ago about Kali schoolgirls
wearing garter belts at age 12(10?) to attract boys.

Girls were dressing like sluts when Madonna was singing "Like a virgin" in 1984.

Britney Spears is just a variation on the same theme.

Even back during the heyday of the "Madonna wannabe", there were the *real* streetwalkers who made the "Madonna look" seem prudish. The fashions now are patterned after those professional sluts.

My wife and I were shopping for our two nieces, ages 4 and 7. The mainstream girls' clothing stores all look like the latest incarnation of Spencer's Gifts, or any other similar places that sold black light posters, lava lamps and edible underwear back in the '70s (and '80s). It's sad whan the most conservative, least tramp-like clothing is at Old Navy.

I think it started with Madonna & has gotten even worse since Brittany Spears came into the limelight!

A local mall had a Spears look-alike contest....it was disgusting to see all the little girls imitating her bare belly & suggestive girations!

You may have a point. There was a story several months ago where a fat middle aged mom was posting on a chat page and using her 15 year old daughter's pictures. She eventually arranged for a meeting with a 24 y/o. man and had her daughter have sex with him, coaching her daughter about what to say and how to act.

Sick people.
