My friends, remember this: the federal government continues to waste tens of billions of dollars each and every year. The federal government continues to pollute the Potomac River. Federal employees started the most devastating forest fires ever in New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. One of those idiots was a part-timer whose job was putting out fires, so to make work for himself, he started one. Jeez!
Yet nobody investigates the federal government! These people lose tens of trillions of dollars. They lie to the American people about the phony Social Security trust fund and the financial condition of Medicare and Medicaid, and they continue to spend billions of dollars propping up favorite constituents like the dairy industry and certain farmers. We attack these problems in this country. All we do is pass more laws, giving the government more power to regulate and taking more power from the people.
Those found guilty of committing fraud at Enron or Global Crossing, WorldCom or Tyco are going to have the book thrown at them - and that's as it should be. But when politicians lie about the financial state of federal programs or knowingly seek to expand programs to the point where they're going to go broke, we don't charge these politicians with fraud. We reelect 'em! And if you don't continue to support the fraud being perpetrated against you by paying your taxes, you wind up going to jail!
We have all the laws on the books we need to get these corporate goons that did this. We have more than enough laws on the books. We don't need more, and we don't need more government intrusion into American business. Capitalism is remarkable; it fixes itself. But Republicans are just like Democrats, and their #1 objective is to get re-elected. And if they sense the American people demanding action on this because the Democrats are going to have resonance with this, then they will join the chorus.
They'll say, "Yeah, we need to come up with new, more strict controls over American business and CEOs, and particularly those accounting companies out there," and we're going to end up with more obstacles for capitalism and capitalists and entrepreneurs. Remember what I said last week: the key to this economy, and market coming back is entrepreneurism - people willing to take risks. We need people who are going to take the risk of doing something, to come up with amazing things that inspire confidence.
But if we continue to come up with laws or tax policy that punish risk takers, and then punish them again when they achieve after taking risks we're going to kill the golden goose. And that's what the Democrats are eager to do because, remember, they want the government to get credit for everything good because they are the party of government. They are not the party of individuals; they are not the party of freedom, and they are not certainly the party of entrepreneurism or risk taking. They are the party of more and bigger government. They dream of a day when they can say the government made this nation great, and they're doing all they can to make that happen.
On Monday, America's Truth Detector attacked and destroyed this Democrat mantra that simply because George W. Bush was a businessman, he is culpable for all the evils of Enron, Global Crossing, Tyco and WorldCom. We started with a clip from CNN's Reliable Sources, where Howard Kurtz questioned Newsweek's Martha Brant about the point we at the EIB Network have made about Clinton's moral failings setting the stage for corporate corruption.
Ms. Brant, like a good liberal, tried to debunk this astute observation as "ridiculous." Yet these same media people are trying to make a link to President Bush, are they not? If a link is absurd for Clinton, who was actually in charge during the eight years of corruption, then why is a link obvious between his successor, who has only been in office for eighteen months - and under whose watch this corruption was discovered? Ms. Brant says she doesn't see the Clinton connection as a reason for "letting these guys off the hook," but no one said they should skate!
Notice that the very first reaction of the Democrats to corporate corruption is to create more laws. They call that reform. We call it "big government." Bush is going to nail these guys to the wall - and the American people know he will. That's a major finding of the latest Gallup Poll. You may not have heard about it, because the results show how in tune with the American people the EIB Network is. Forty-six percent say Bush is responsible for these scandals; but 51% say Clinton's behavior was responsible.
Ultra-Liberal Newsweek columnist Eleanor Clift writes, "Suddenly George W. Bush has the zeal of a reformer on corporate greed despite questions about his own corporate background." See, what's happening here, folks? The Democrats cannot find an issue and they still haven't found one. As we've said countless times, they only have one playbook and one play in it: smear and lie. It's obvious by their going back to the well on Bush and Harken Industries. It's a recycled scandal they tried to use against his father, and that Ma Richards tried to use in 1994.
Sadly for Democrats, they keep running into facts that derail their efforts to smear Bush. The SEC says Bush didn't do anything wrong. He sold Harken stock at $4 a share. It went down to $1 but went back up to $8. Had he sold it a year later, he would have doubled the $848,000 he made. Byron York wrote all about Bush's business life in the American Spectator in 1999, and we covered that on Monday. We also asked (as Rich Galen pointed out in a brilliant column on Monday) in The Truth Detector! Cozy Clintonistas, how John Corzine and Maria Cantwell didn't know what was going on when they were in high finance. How come they get free passes?
And what about John McCain, the #1 Senate recipient of campaign cash from 1989 to 2001? McCain has written a New York Times op-ed piece in which he's joining Daschle in demanding a new, introspective look at Bush and everybody else. Yet Global Crossing is every bit as corrupt as WorldCom or Enron. Why does DNC chief Terry McAuliffe, who made $18 million off of 100 grand, get a free pass? You liberals can keep comparing Bush to Clinton. We'll take the comparison any day.
And if McCain decides he's going to jump to the other side or make a third party run in 2004, that's fine, but it won't be on this issue. These Democrats from Daschle to Sarbanes are making fools of themselves. The Eleanor Clifts of the world will never mention that Clinton's treasury secretary, Bob Rubin working for Citigroup, Enron's top investor, or Joe Lieberman getting $250,000 from Enron, or Tom Daschle lavishing taxpayer money on corporations from Boeing to Home Stake Mining. But this Gallup poll proves that we're working on that correctly here at the EIB Network.
WorldCom lied about $4 Billion dollars. BFD! Government losses, misspends, and defrauds the US Taxpayer of that on a daily basis.
Add the media to that list. It was shameful the questions they were asking yesterday about Harkin. I read the thread on FR, it's pretty pathetic....
