The Associated Press Monday, July 8, 2002; 10:21 AM LOS ANGELES ?? An amateur video shows Inglewood police officers punching a teenager and slamming his head against the hood of a patrol car, and the department said it will investigate.

The probe was announced Sunday after the tape, taken a day earlier from a nearby motel, was turned over to police and local media.

I'm not saying that police shouldn't use all the force necessary to subdue an uncooporative or potentially violent suspect. But in the video they appear to use excessive force. Then again, there's no audio so we don't know the whole picture. We don't know what the guy was saying, or what happened beforehand.

But anyway, after thinking about it, the way the guy was slammed into the car was very hard, but it probably happens to unruly criminals every day, so that's not really the thing. But punching him when he is cuffed and subdued is over the line.

I'm not bleeding heart or liberal. I do wonder how a 16 year old kid was able to put a gash on a 200 pound policeman. BTW do you think this doesn't happen to white people too? Back when you were mouthing off to cops, there were very few with police departments with Ninja-SWAT team mentality. They didn't even have SWAT teams then.

It's very telling that the video appears to show two of the policemen trying to pull one of the policemen's hands away. They are from different police departments too. Reminds me of Miami post-Elian, when many of the Miami cops were using force on women, children and grandmothers, and the Coral Gables and Hialeah police said they didn't want any part in it.

That's real nice. I thought Elian should have stayed here. I had a place in Miami first on Brickell for 2 years and in the Gables for 4 years. I once saw 2 black Miami City cops beat an employee of mine on Dodge Island severely to the point of losing total bowel control and total unconsciousness while he was cuffed because he uttered the dreaded word "myatta" at them which is the "N-word" in gutter Spanish. When they finished with him, I remarked that they were no better than the Klan and they politely asked me if I wanted "some". I declined and went to bail out my chum and see that he got to Jackson Memorial Emergency. His offense "being drunk and arguing with the Cops while trying to reboard my cargo ship at the dock." He was my Captain and he was from Barranquilla.

I'm no stranger to rowdy hombres with badges. I'm just not as emotional as you folks are about it.

When I was a kid, if you did something stupid that got the cops involved, they would take you home to DAD. That was far worse that going to court. If you were STUPID enuf to spit on a cop, reisit them (i.e., fight with them), swear at them, then you would got a nightstick up-side the head. Then they would take you home to DAD, who would smack you again because you were stupid. This method of controlling male adolescents worked for years. Now, these kids get to court and are let go with no consequences! No DAD - cops unable to communicate the facts of life. I was never in trouble with the police, but I knew the score. It lets a kid become a man and leave being stupid in childhood.

I did notice you protesting/preaching about post that had nothing to do with you.

You're right - it was a long day, and I've been fighting bad-assed migraines for the last four days or so - I admit that I did fly off the handle a bit; I had also just had a conversation (more an arguement) about the "African American" v. black v. colored v. "what to call us this week."

I've got relatives who take issue with my conservatism, and are vocal about letting me know about it.

The portion of the tape I saw showed the kid with his hands in cuffs behind his back. The officer moved him toward the hood of the car and SLAMMED him face down onto the hood. Next shot showed a white police officer take his fist and slam it into the kid's face while he was still down on the hood.

For whatever reason the media is now selectively showing the tape.........strange doings.

I'd agree to every supporter of this cop getting the same beating after being handcuffed and propped up against a car.

It doesn't matter a damn bit what happened before he was subdued. Even if he'd killed the cop's daughter, once the perpetrator is subdued, that's it.

You're right, we didn't get to see this little guy's vicious and life-threatening hand-to-hand assault on the cop, nor the beating he took 5 on 1 as they subdued him before the handcuffs and the videotaped footage.
