The reason McCain doesn't switch parties is that in the Democratic party he would not be a 'maverick', or 'principled'. The media would no longer flock to him when they had other, better, Democrats to deal with. Kerry is the Democratic leader on the military (yuck), Kennedy on education, etc. There would not be a natural niche for McCain.

McCain likes to sit in on Republican caucus' also so then he run out and can run out and say what they are saying. Probably the reason for scheduling caucus meetings when mccain is nowhere to be found.
