The English variety of herrring gull appears to be much more aggressive than those I've encountered here.

On a trip to the UK a coule of years ago; my husband & I were walking along a harbor on the coast of Cornwall. A woman nearby was eating an ice cream cone when a gull came swooping in and stole the cone right out of her hand.

We decided to stand under an awning to eat our ice cream just in case the robber returned to the scene of his crime.

They're smart birds. If they're protected, they'll get uppity. The English are insane for allowing the little pests to breed - inland seagulls will destroy anything like fishing waters, for example. Not only as predators, but they tend to contaminate a waterway with parasites and all kind of nastyness.

Of course, the "better class" of Englishman will usually swarm to fishing waters outside of England for their sport. Another kind of parasite infestation :).

At the plant were I work I have the same problem with swallows. They nest in overhangs and I must pass by these areas several times a day.

They seem to be more aggressive around dawn and dusk. They are superb flyers. They swoop down at me and pull away at the last second easily with in arms reach screeching warning calls at me just inches away. When they do this and I am not expecting it, it can be quite startling.

They don’t seem to do this when I am walking with another person. I guess they respect numbers.
