I have talked to an Ex-Nazi soldier about the Second World War, and asked him about the Jews. He said that he didn't know what Hitler was doing to the Jews, all he knew was what the propaganda machine told him, that his home land was under attack, and he was needed to defend it. So he joined the military and was taken prisoner on D-Day, when he was defending the beach. It wouldn't surpise me if some of the Jews didn't know what was happening, or just tried to deny the clues they saw.
