Mayor passes new laws against smelly tourists

A French mayor has brought in a new law against smelly tourists.

It allows police to stop people leaving the beach in swimwear for an odour check. Anyone found to be too smelly will be ordered to cover up or get a fine.

Henri Dunoyer is the mayor of the posh resort town of La Grand-Motte in southern France.

He says tourists stinking of sweat and suntan lotion put him off his food and wine as they pass the terrace of his favourite restaurant.

Mr Dunoyer claims Britons are among the worst offenders, despite the fact the French use less soap than anyone in Europe.

He said: "I sit on the terrace of one of my favourite restaurants trying to enjoy good food and wine, and then a smelly tourist comes in and ruins everything. I have had enough and plan to make sure it stops now.

He has had a new law passed that comes into force tomorrow. He is putting up signs to make it clear what people can wear on the beach and in town.

As a 'goodwill gesture' the mayor has arranged for special T-shirts to be handed out, but local hoteliers horrified at the move say he will frighten off their guests.

One who declined to be named said: "He's mad. People will of course refuse to wear them - each T-shirt is effectively saying 'I smell'."

Mr Dunoyer added: "It's a question of respect. People come off the beach covered in sweat and suntan lotion and it's enough to make those working in the restaurants, bars and shops feel sick."

I used to work for a large corporation in the US that was owned by the Brits. Visiting America was very popular for the Brits. Nearly any reason was good enough to visit our site. Needless to say we had Englishmen on the site routinely.

An inside joke was that the three things our English friends needed upon arrival in the states was a bath, a toothbrush and a tailor. With good reason.

The French might try what the Spaniards did in the 70's. There were ads on tv and on posters urging the natives to use their deodorant. The one I recall showed a young fellow on a bus, making progress in hitting on a pretty miss until he raised his arm to grab the strap. She was instantly repelled by his odor. The message was clear.

I was at the grocery store this morning, and I saw a woman who was about 5'1" and 300pounds, proudly strutting down aisle 10 in spandex bike shorts.
You only THINK those were spandex bike shorts. Really, they are one-size-fits-most loosefit knit boxer shorts in size medium. She probably wouldn't have the strength to get spandex shorts pulled up past her knees. Sorry for the mental pictures all this may be creating!

Anyone who has spent anytime in a French Village will wonder how the smelly tourist was ever sniffed out, considering the Texas feed lot, in mid July aroma, that permeates your average French Village in all seasons.

I worked in London during a very hot summer. Us Yanks used to say that the only thing Brits ever put under their arms was an umbrella :-)
My visits to France were no better.

Are Americans the only ones who know about baths, showers and deodorant?

What a joke! The french mostly all stink, and seldom bathe.

That plus so many people smoke, that who can taste the food there anyway?
