Mayor passes new laws against smelly tourists

A French mayor has brought in a new law against smelly tourists.

It allows police to stop people leaving the beach in swimwear for an odour check. Anyone found to be too smelly will be ordered to cover up or get a fine.

Henri Dunoyer is the mayor of the posh resort town of La Grand-Motte in southern France.

He says tourists stinking of sweat and suntan lotion put him off his food and wine as they pass the terrace of his favourite restaurant.

Mr Dunoyer claims Britons are among the worst offenders, despite the fact the French use less soap than anyone in Europe.

He said: "I sit on the terrace of one of my favourite restaurants trying to enjoy good food and wine, and then a smelly tourist comes in and ruins everything. I have had enough and plan to make sure it stops now.

He has had a new law passed that comes into force tomorrow. He is putting up signs to make it clear what people can wear on the beach and in town.

As a 'goodwill gesture' the mayor has arranged for special T-shirts to be handed out, but local hoteliers horrified at the move say he will frighten off their guests.

One who declined to be named said: "He's mad. People will of course refuse to wear them - each T-shirt is effectively saying 'I smell'."

Mr Dunoyer added: "It's a question of respect. People come off the beach covered in sweat and suntan lotion and it's enough to make those working in the restaurants, bars and shops feel sick."

One hot, humid summer day, we were standing in line to get into the Haunted House at Disney World and there were about eight Brits standing in front of us.

Believe me, they were stinking so badly of sweat that we were forced to hold our hands over our noses and mouths.

I agree with that mayor, there should be a law against stinky people. ;-)

I think it is a law that will save France. Viva la soap! If the French could learn to bathe, think what will come next. The women will shave under their arms and shave their legs. French soldiers will bathe and the Germans will not be able to smell them coming. This mayor is a comer.

No, I'm almost certain he does not mean the Arabs, and I'll tell you why: The arabs may be there on a Tourist Visa, but they are not tourists...

An oxymoron if I ever saw one...

This coming from a country where it's de riguere to bathe every Saturday night, and deodorant is optional...

Boy oh boy does he have it wrong. The French are the stinkiest people I have had the misfortune to be around.Went there in 1951 and 1952. had to stay up wind or hold your nose.

The mayor is taking important action. Wouldn't want to overwhelm the native Roquefort-Gitanes breath aroma that pervades France with something as malodorously American as Coppertone.

And wouldn't want to offend Osama whose favorite cheese is Caves de Roquefort Societe Blue d’Auvergne, according to:

M. Dunoyer, in America, we have a saying to cover just this sort of situation...

"...He who smelt it, dealt it."

Monsieur le Mayor should do what I observed in Spain. We were attending a very crowded church service in Madrid on a very warm day. It was getting a bit "close," to say the least. After a while, some of the men of the church started misting the whole congregation with cologne water. It helped a lot! Perhaps the beachgoers in La Grand-Motte could be made to walk through a deodorizing shower on their way past M. le Mayor's table at the restaurant, so as not to offend his delicate olfactory sensibilities!

How, amidst all their own B.O., will they quantify what offensive is? Our 2 flights to Tahiti via French-originated AOM Airlines was a rude awakening for us as to French = severe body odor.

How can they consider themselves as chic and terribly fashionable. This image is quickly dispatched as soon as they raise their arms! Phew!

I can't imagine a whole beachfull of them.

they should have stripes painted on then so you can tell if they are walking or rolling. A public safety issue don't want to be in front of an out of control fat chick.

After the mayor tackles the smell job, maybe he can get the German women to shave their legs.
