Pledge for the Workers
My daughter, who is 11, and I were delighted at the California court decision omitting the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. She and I have always been uncomfortable saying the pledge, not only because of the religious imposition, but because it seems very strange to pledge loyalty to a scrap of cloth representing a corrupt nation that imposes its will, both economic and military, around the world by force. So she inspired me to rewrite the Pledge.
Imagine schoolchildren every day reciting the following:
ledge allegiance to all the ordinary people around the world,
to the laid off Enron workers and the WorldCom workers
the maquiladora workers
and the sweatshop workers from New York to Indonesia,
who labor not under God but under the heel of multinational corporations; I pledge allegiance
to the people of Iraq,
Palestine and Afghanistan,
and to their struggles to survive and resist
slavery to corporate greed,
brutal wars against their families,
and the economic and environmental ruin wrought by global capitalism; I pledge allegiance
to building a better world
where human needs are met
and with real liberty, equality and justice for all.
The original pledge does not include or represent us godless radicals. The backlash against the California decision shows just how thin our democracy is.

Althought I agree with very little of what you wrote, I commend you for having the courage to come onto this forum and express your thoughts.
That said, let me challenge you. You indicate a desire for expanded freedoms. You identify with the common person. That said, do you trust the common person with gun ownership? Do you trust the common person to bear concealed weapons in public places?

Please don't tell me she has tenure!!!! She is in the "good company" at UT but her ilk belongs in Berkley or Harvard.

Socialists hold meeting in support of Nader for president Co-founder of the group said meetings will not always focus on Socialism

After an informational meeting Thursday by the Champaign chapter of the International Socialist Organization, many of the 16 students who attended still had questions concerning what ISO is really about.
The meeting was scheduled from 8 to 9 p.m., but it didn't adjourn until 9:30 because of the wide range of questions students had. The meeting ended in an emotional discussion on politics, as people expressed their general disgust for the two-party system and gave reasons to support Ralph Nader for president.
"There will be no change if people aren't willing to stand up for what they believe in," said Daniel Nelson, freshman in LAS, in response to the notion that voting for a third party would be throwing away a vote.
Aside from backing Nader, no clear objectives were proposed, as the meeting pinballed among topics such as civil rights, abortion, the death penalty, corporate greed and social inequality.
"I was surprised by the fact that it was kind of an open discussion," said Jon Holt, senior in LAS.
Holt said he came to the meeting because a friend told him that ISO supported Nader and he wanted to "make an informed decision on who to vote for."
Although he found the meeting to be less organized than expected, Holt said that many of the people seemed well informed and that he would probably attend future meetings.
"I'm not turned off to it," Holt said.
However, Nelson said he was put off by the lack of focus within the group.
"It just seemed kind of unorganized, and I feel there are other organizations on this campus that would be a better use of my time," Nelson said.
Arun Bhalla co-founded the Champaign chapter of ISO last year and admits there is no clear plan for the direction of the group.
"We don't have a set agenda," Bhalla said. "I've done some research, but that doesn't mean I know everything."
Bhalla said future meetings will probably focus on one topic. Anyone can volunteer to lead the group if they are concerned about a certain issue. Then, they give a short speech about the history of the issue and present facts that the group can discuss.
Bhalla said the Socialist aspect of the group would probably remain separate from normal meetings. People who are more interested in Socialist theory could meet again during the week, he said.
"We could have a discussion group where people could read Socialist books and talk about them, but that would be separate from the meetings because not everybody is interested in that sort of thing," Bhalla said.

I don't know if I successfully emailed you already. I am not a supporter of gun control. Most socialists aren't. When a crisis comes and if there's class war, I don't want the police and state to be the only ones with guns.

Dear Ms. Cloud,
so happy to know such brilliant minds as yours are inspiring the youth of the nation.....hopefully you will be able to be a small catalyst in the emergence of the Socialist United States of America.....a beacon of light in a dim world dominated by greedy capitalist, globalist, and self seeking religionist.....lets us hope that soon this nation will rise to the magnificent level of the those socialist/atheist nation states whose citizens blaze as examples to the world of a more reasoned and just society...
I do hope your life style matches your rhetoric and that you have begun yourself to live in a manner consistent with your philosophy.....so I must ask a view questions to discern your level of commitment
what type car do you drive?
do you have a clothes drier?
do you own/use a cell phone?
did you see Lord of the Rings?
how large is your home/apartment?
do you purchase fresh fruit and vegetables?
do you own a computer?
although it is hot in Austin I do hope you are not squandering the nation's resources on air-conditioning....air condition itself is a product of capitalism.....resist the temptation...is your class air-condition?
I do so hope you are not one of those radicals who rallies others to the noble vision of atheistic socialism and then goes home to eat Blue Bell ice cream...

To: commieprof
That's laughable. Why do Democrats like Clinton and Gore support gun control then?
To: Conservative Chicagoan
Because they are not socialists.
To: commieprof
Are you actually denying that two of the most important figures in the history of promoting communism are not socialists? Despite their gun control and socialiced medicine, you honestly don't think they are socialists? I don't know how any intelligent person could have a conversation with scum like you because you are so far out there.
