Well, I was trying to be careful about spelling it out, lest posts get pulled--but consider: They left the bar in full-party mode. They arrived at the van Dam house in full party mode. But between the time they arrived at the house and the time they sat down in the kitchen--something had happened. People had become "somber."

My feeling--that was when they knew Danielle was missing, possibly even when they knew she was dead. The rest of the evening was spent cleaning up the crime scene house and doing a little "story coordination" work among the merry party-goers.

I agree. Somber is a very interesting choice of words. What happened at the pizza party so as to cause a mood "so shaded as to be dark and gloomy" ?

One might speculate from this if its possible the pizza party goers have made some sort of pact or are mutually involved in covering up something terrible that has not been discovered yet. For example; they all return from the bar to the Van Dam home drunk and on drugs and then find out one of them has killed Danielle. Everyone points fingers at each other and before you know it, someone cooks up a plan. Then everything spins out of control from there.
