San Antonio TX area flood thread

Record rainfall in SAN ANTONIO TX with over 10 inches at the airport breaking the all time month record for July in ONE DAY! doppler says 15-20 inches have fallen just north of SAN ANTONIO..roads closed, water rescues in progress. Rainfall rates of 3-5 inches per hour have been fallening in the area just north SAN ANTONIO. New radar shots the last few minutes show Moderate-Heavy rain moving/developing back towards SAN ANTONIO from the northwest.

Folks the system has stalled and I believe may be forming a tropical depression over land...How can this be? Well so much rain has fallen in the area and there is so much standing 78-80 degree water around its almost like being over an ocean. This has happened before with hurricane Danny which moved inland for days, weakened to nothing, dumped 14 inches of rain ahead of its path over NC..and was a strong tropical storm with 65 MPH winds as it moved off the coast!

In fact new radar shots showing almost "feeder" bands forming near the gulf.. Looks like the circulation is just NE SAN ANTONIO by 20 miles or so...Both visible and infared Satellite also very impressive

Thanks, I think. Hey, no one can tell me I brought this rain. Geesh, I go from the biggest fire in Arizona history to one of the biggest floods in San Antonio history. They said San Antonio had a record rainfall total for the MONTH of July - YESTERDAY...

I just heard on the noon news here in Houston that this rainfall is of the same magnitude we got last year when Tropical Storm Allison came thru. Not good.

Dittomom, since you know where Bandera is, I'll tell you about a larger rain and flood there than this. About 20 years ago a hurricane blew inland and dumped 36 inches of rain in a very short time in the Hill Country above Bandera. The floodwaters rose over 40 feet above the riverbed in areas between Medina and Bandera, where our cabin still remains. This is no exaggeration, I saw clothing and furniture up in the remaining treetops. Eight of our neighbors were killed - nothing of their houses along the river remained except concrete slabs. Most of the *huge* centuries-old cypress trees were snapped like toothpicks. The floating debris of trees scoured anything in their way like battering rams. The stories I heard from survivors were hair-raising!

I grew up in the Kerrville area, and if it rained like this it was bad news. It floods there and it floods FAST. People who aren't from around those parts try to brave it and cross the rivers and streams, but natives know better. I'll pray! Thanks for the news.

Ouch. We lived in San Antonio from 1980 - 1984, I think I know what you're talking about.

The news is saying that the town of Bandera is completely cut off. You can't get in or out of there via Route 16 or 173. They said the Medina River was 19 feet above flood stage right now.

Here's a photo (taken with a web cam so quality isn't good) of the view from our condo. That's the Medina River running from the top to the bottom of the photo and the creek (formerly a dry wash on Saturday) is running into the river from right to left.

Hi, neighbor, I'm just north of you in McLennan County and can't help but think "there but for the grace of God....". We're water logged, but it appears that the worst of this almost gets here, then loops back around south to San Antonio again.

P.S. that portion of the river is easily 3X as wide as it was when we got here.

Just spoke to a friend at Pedernales Electric Co-Op, she said they are currently evacuating small towns near Johnson City, north and a bit west of San Antonio. Bandera is west of SA as well. Pedernales River is flooding, and yes, if you look at the animated radar gif on Yahoo you'll see a circular pattern around San Antonio!

Here in Austin it's bad too, my swimming pool is almost flooding into my yard - I've never seen that before. Streets are bad, lots of road closures.

I also just spoke to a friend on his cell, who was driving out of Wimberley just a bit NW of SA, he (idiot) almost got washed away at a low water crossing. He drives a GM sedan, and lost his power steering going across, but made it. Don't EVER RISK A HIGH WATER CROSSING!!!!! Less than 1 foot of water can wash away a car. Be careful, my friends.
