San Antonio TX area flood thread

Posted on 07/02/2002 7:40:34 AM PDT by newsperson999

Record rainfall in SAN ANTONIO TX with over 10 inches at the airport breaking the all time month record for July in ONE DAY! doppler says 15-20 inches have fallen just north of SAN ANTONIO..roads closed, water rescues in progress. Rainfall rates of 3-5 inches per hour have been fallening in the area just north SAN ANTONIO. New radar shots the last few minutes show Moderate-Heavy rain moving/developing back towards SAN ANTONIO from the northwest.

Folks the system has stalled and I believe may be forming a tropical depression over land...How can this be? Well so much rain has fallen in the area and there is so much standing 78-80 degree water around its almost like being over an ocean. This has happened before with hurricane Danny which moved inland for days, weakened to nothing, dumped 14 inches of rain ahead of its path over NC..and was a strong tropical storm with 65 MPH winds as it moved off the coast!

In fact new radar shots showing almost "feeder" bands forming near the gulf.. Looks like the circulation is just NE SAN ANTONIO by 20 miles or so...Both visible and infared Satellite also very impressive

It's not tropical...the rain bands are swirling around the mid-level low. There is no low pressure at the surface

I keep looking up to see those rain bands and mid-level low, but water keeps getting in my eyes. ;~)

Oh man... I'm in Kendall county. The raining's stopped here for the last couple of hours, so I thought maybe we'd seen the last of it, but I guess not. Our total is 18 inches here. I guess I'd better brace for more.

You may be right but I really think its a highbreed of some sorts and or a SHARS event. There was a weak surface low this am with a north surface wind west of san antonio and the NWS discussion this am said there was a weak surface low...don't see that now though

Danny was a tropical system as it moved onshore, stayed over land for almost a week and reformed before it moved over the water..I remember..it had 65 MPH winds and was reclassified as a tropical storm the second it moved off the coast near the NC.VA border(It had 65 knot winds at 1000 feet on the doppler before it moved off shore). It was very odd thats why a remember that.

AS you know Sometimes these upper level/mid level systems become tropical if they stay over the ocean long enough..I have never heard of a case over land before but If it was going to do it now is as good as it gets.

What gets me is the rarity of this type of event. It's obviusly a Gulf phenomenon that one would think would occur regularly somewhere along the Gulf coast every year during the 'tropical season'. But it doesn't. last time was nearly five years ago now.

Check this out. Actually looks like good news to me. This morning there was only a giant red blob over central Tx. Seems to be breaking up and moving E now.

You're right by my brother's house then.

We've vacationed in that resort.

How's Medina doing? (Getting fuller, I'd guess.)

I'm in McAllen, and it's clear skys here today.
We had ours Sunday from this same system that is flooding the San Antonio area.
I've worked in South Texas for many years, and I've never seen the quantity of rain over a short period of time that we had here Sunday unless a hurricane or tropical storm were moving in.
Torrential rains are not that uncommon in San Antonio, but in deep South Texas, it's unheard of.
Now I've got to check on my son and his family on the banks of the Guadalupe at Ingram.

Hope his house is ok COB. Let me know. Every time the Guadalupe would flood when I was growing up, my step dad would have to go out there and repair the water lines that were washed away. People would be without water for days.

The problem with this being a SHARS is the fact that this system has most of the precip east and not north and west of the center. If you go back and look at the charts...its purely an upper level system. This mornings 850 chart only shows a weak trof...but very pronounced at 500 MB. The upper system has sheared out some...but last weak it was the size of the gulf.

Danny was not all that unusual in that refire. A lot of system will do that after being over land for a while....especially if they get near the gulf stream. This system has never had any tropical characteristics. Last year, allison spent a week over land and looked like a hurricane as it entered Alabama...complete with an eye.
