GIRL, GRANDMA KILLED AS SUV JUMPS CURB

June 24, 2002 -- A Brooklyn woman and her 11-year-old granddaughter were killed when an out-of-control SUV jumped a curb and slammed into them as they sat in front of their building, police said yesterday.

"It's like a nightmare. I left my kids and their grandmother and went to work, and I come home to find out they are dead," said a distraught Roslyn Patrick, 30.

Here in the People's Republic of Park Slope, I've been yelled at by old hippies... "Why don't you drive something responsible???", when they see me in my 1994 Explorer.

If they are anything like the old hippies here in Ithaca (the City of Evil), they probably drive big ol' VW vans and Volvo wagons that require lead additives just to run and get 17 miles per gallon going downhill in a breeze.

What do you mean "Huh"? Is there anybody other than the Saudis who have any rational reason to enjoy seeing Americans all driving around in SUVs? I mean, Christians in other lands can't possibly have any reason to enjoy seeing that. You read these stories about the USAF bombing a bunch of innocent Christians in Bosnia three days after the Saudis ink some sort of a huge purchase order with Boeing or McDonell Douglas and what most people would get out of that is that SUVs kill Christians.

By the way, it is likely that gramma and her granddaughter would be just as dead if they were struck by a Taurus. Or Accord. Or Civic. Or Yugo.

Now if we were all on Segways, these two ladies would have been OK.

We shouldn't allow SUVs anymore if they are going to continue "roaring" and "jumping" at grammas.

When are people gonna learn? Keeping a dangerous SUV is an invitation to disaster. The owner of this SUV should have known that it was likely to jump the curb and go after those innocent pedestrians. The dangerous proclivities of the SUV breed are well known.

Even an SUV which has been with a family for years, living peacefully in the garage, can revert to its natural instincts at any moment. Their breeding will eventually emerge, and they will display their viscious qualities. No one should be allowed to keep such a dangerous vehicle in the city.

There is an SUV on my street that loves to chase VW's and Yugos just for the sport of it. I have called the tow truck people a number of times. They just tell the owners to put it back in the garage. It is all so very frustrating.

This is nothing more than an unfortunate and sad accident. The SUV is not to blame. I guess you could blame the driver if you want to blame somebody. Does that make you folks feel better now to blame somebody?

I do see a LOT of "over the line" "in MY lane" driving activity involving SUV's when they are turning into parking lots off the main roads, and turning into roads out of parking lots!!It's like it's TOO much for the drivers to handle, or they just can't judge how far they are over the yellow line of the other lane! In almost all these events, it's a woman, with a SUV full of children!!

Fords are far worse. It was an Explorer that got the wedding photographer Rush spoke of yesterday and it was an Expedition that went after the grandma and kid.

I just thank goodness it wasn't an Excursion. That thing might still be on the loose a day later.

People get in car accidents every day but the only time the body type of the vehicle is mentioned prominently is when it's an SUV.

SUVs are more likely to kill the people they hit, As was said before, f=ma and p=mv. That is why SUV owners pay higher on the liability part of the insurance.

The reason that SUVs are mentioned more, may be, quite simply, that there was a fatality.
