AB 1058 Anti-SUV bill clone passes in CA
Hegh Hewitt | 2002/07/01 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 07/01/2002 6:51:05 PM PDT by ZGuy

John Campbell (R) just announced on the Hugh Hewitt show that the democrats in Sacramento have pulled a fast one. Bill 1058 which has been written about on several posts originally failed. The democrats took a bill on Friday night which dealt with an unrelated subject and gutted out the language. They then inserted the exact language of 1058 and the senate passed it Friday. This (Monday) afternoon the house got the bill. The democrats had to hold a hearing and every office in the capital was available but they chose to hold the "hearings" in the smallest office in the building - the only one which had no TV cameras, no radio, no cameras, and no space for reporters or the public to attend. They then passed a vote making this bill exempt from the 3-day waiting period required by law for public input. The democrats just passed the bill in the last 45 minutes and it now goes to the governor's desk. No republicans voted for the bill in either chamber. One highlight - (Dennis?) Cardoza - the democrat running for Condit's seat voted for the bill in the central valley. He's toast.

If they keep up the maintenance on their old cars they should run surprisingly clean, but they are not fuel efficiant as most SUV's

NO. MARTA

Actually, it's funny you mention that - I told a story a while ago about MARTA (and no, not that old Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta one); it had to do with all these women who get these hairdos that stand up a foot or more above their heads. I called 'em MARTA-do's. My wife asked why. I said that their hair was stacked so high atop their head that they HAD to ride MARTA, otherwise their "expensive" project 'do would get smushed in the car...

As an aside, my observations are that rural SUV drivers are polite, so it may just be the city's spiritual pollution effect

As someone who sometimes has to drive into the People's Republic of DC, it's my opinion that this is closer to the mark. The majority of the drivers there, regardless of vehicle type, are arrogant and rude.

You see the same effect on sidewalks amongst the pedestrians. In office buildings people arrogantly demand that crowded elevators be held for them, when there are five others available and one will arrive within 30 seconds. And I've lost track of the number of times I've seen subway riders risk life and limb trying to board departing trains, when another will be along in less than 5 minutes. The people who do these things are simply wound too tight, and taking away my SUV won't change that one bit.

I have yet to see any logical arguement against an individual's right to own and drive whatever they desire

Look, drive whatever you please. But SUVs aren't famous for being fuel efficient and when we're dependent on terrorist producing nations for oil, a shift in tastes toward smaller more fuel efficient cars would help a lot.

"BTW, I'm doing just fine with my wife and three children in our Urban Assault Vehicle. I'm sure you/they don't expect me to cram my large frame (6'4"/285#) and the remainder of my family into an econobox, do you?"

Don't worry, friend, once they start taxing "junk" food, you'll buy less and be able to fit into that small car. After all, it's for your own good ;-).

I don't like SUVs myself because they're ugly. But my Mercedes 420SEL sedan is hardly a fuel conservation paragon :-).

When they came for the Suv's i did nothing Because I thought they were ugly....When they came for the Minivans, I did nothing because I didn't have that many children, when they came for the Mercedes, there was no on left to help me, and the previously wronged joined in against me....

7.9 liter V8

Since I know a Pontiac 455 is 7.5 liters, I was compelled to do the math...

440 ci = 7.2 liters.

So, unless you've bored her out to something close to 482 ci, 'taint no 7.9 liters under your hood. ;-)

Yeah, when I drive on the sidewalks, those pesky pedestrians get highly indignant! Ah, well, they wash off the undercarriage with a high-powered hose...

I take it this is a joke.

My first car only had a 383 under the hood, but it was a 383 Police Interceptor engine in a 1970 Plymouth Gran Fury. My mom drove it with no clue as to what was there. My dad knew though. [g] And yes, I knew once I got my hands on it in '79. And it was no econobox...

There's a simple reason folks buy SUV's:
"CAFE" requirements prohibit cars large enough to carry normal-size human beings and normal-size families.
What's the alternative?
Drive a "truck".

One other factor, of course, is that the different SUV's out there at least look a little bit different from each other, unlike the rubber-stamped Camry/accord/taurus/altima/hyu ndai's that you pass in traffic.

Pursuant to article II, section 9, of the California Constitution, a referendum is the power of the electors to approve or reject any statute enacted by the Legislature.

We tried the referendum with our Assualt Weapon Ban and couldn't get the needed signatures. Most people don't know/care. I'd really like a state with a lot lower population. Less people, less twits.
