Gang-rape of teenager ordered as punishment for brother's sins
ABCNewsOnline ^ | 7/2/02 | Anon

A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of a higher tribe, police said.

A Panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala.

Meerwala lies 610 kilometres south-west of the capital Islamabad.

District police chief Malik Saeed Awan said authorities were informed of the publicly-ordered gang-rape several days after the incident.

He said four men took turns to sexually assault the girl inside a room. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers.

The rape was to avenge the "insult" caused to a family of the Mastoi tribe by the girl's brother's alleged "illicit affair" with a woman of a higher social standing.

The girl and her brother were from the lower Gujjar tribe.

The Panchayat had threatened that all women in the accused's family would be raped unless the 18-year-old submitted herself to the public gang rape.

Awan said police were taking action against members of the Panchayat.

Lawyers visiting the tribal area on Sunday urged the authorities to prosecute the rapists and the jury.

The Inquisition didn't require torture, the Papal Inquisition means something other than what the Spanish Inquisition meant and the the Spanish kings were going on their own for the most part without approval from the Pope.

The following websites were located from just a cursory search for the facts about the Islamic Faith.

The graphic stories of Muslim rapes and murder of non-muslim children and women are horrifying.

Actually, there are still millions of Mayans in Mexico and Central America. Very little of their old culture is still around, other than the language, though.

What kind of culture did the conquistadors destroy when they destroyed the Aztec culture? And they had help from other Indian tribes who were glad to see it end.

Indeed they had a great deal of help from other tribes. They were after all 400 with a few horses and cannon.

Bernal Diaz, Conquest of Mexico, is an account of the intrigue behind the battles.

The conquistadores did not operate as agents in a vacuum.

...there is no evidence that the gang rape and humiliation of the girl in this story was based on the teachings of Islam.

Islam is explicit on the lower status and treatment of women. Islamic culture sanctions "honor" punishment and killing of women. There have been several threads here on this happening in Pakistan, which is an Islamic State with Islamic "Sharia" laws.

The Mayan culture was mostly over well before the Spaniards came to Mexico but the people are still there. I met a Mayan who spoke fluent English and 6 other languages, he was forced to learn Spanish when he went to school but spoke 2 Indian dialects before that time.

I don't know of any public lynchings, in the real sense of the term, in the 60's South.

There were three actually, in 1961, 1963, and 1964 (plus the usual unexplained "disappearances" of young black men). You are correct that the practice was beginning to die out by the 1940s.

The fact that 1,000 people cheered this violent and perverted act sickens me even more than the act (gang-rape) itself. I believe that a society that would act in this manner is beyond redemption. And that's not even considering the fact that this is an innocent girl. It was her brother who was supposed to be "punished" here. Sick, sick, sick.

I also haven't forgotten the cheers that went up in these Muslim areas on 9/11 when the WTC towers came falling down. We must come to terms with the fact that many Muslims over there see America as a great evil and want to see us destroyed.

Whatever it is, it certainly isn't justice. It is simple organized barbarity.

The thing that astonishes me is, we have women like Catherine MacKinnon running around here in North America (she's Canadian) claiming "all sex is rape" and "marriage is just institutionalized rape," etc., making to appear evil that which is good and noble, and yet you have areas of the world where there really IS "institutionalized rape," etc.

Now, do you think Ms. MacKinnon, on behalf of this oppressed womyn, is going to hop a jet to this god-foresaken area of the world, and seek to set things aright?

No, because she really WOULD get her clinched *ss pried open and loosened by the most hideous barbarians even SHE could conceive of.

The reason "feminists" like her are so bold to speak out is that we ARE civilized, and we DO respect "womyn" and "women" and all others whose physical strength makes them the weakest among us.

H*ll, in rural China they still expose deformed infants on a mountainside.

We have no idea how good we have it, and how far above "barbarian" status we really are, the MacKinnons of this world notwithstanding.

so the stone age is back?

In that part of the world it never really left. However what progress that had been made was mostly reversed around 800 AD or so, when Mohammedism replaced the local religion(s).

Islam is explicit on the lower status and treatment of women.

Then surely you'll have no trouble finding a passage or two in the Koran that explicitly authorizes the rape of women. Again, my supper's getting cold; please hurry.

It just astounds me. It is hard to believe there are areas of the world, entire cultures, that believe this is "justice."

I hope the Pakistani authorities are set to execute the principals in this sorry episode.

Further, I hope they are executed swiftly and with little pain. It would serve as a fitting juxtaposition to the barbarity they have wrought.

Bernal Diaz, Conquest of Mexico, is an account of the intrigue behind the battles.

I have read that --- and it's easy to see from that that some cultures are better if destroyed. The level of human sacrifice in Mexico was so high that the Indians welcomed Cortez and readily converted --except for the Aztecs who had to be forced.

You apparently haven't been reading this thread. I find that pretty much par for the course for you.

Aren't there some more decent Christians somewhere you can malign and slander?

I'm sure we could find some.

If you wish to try pretending my cited instances do not exist, you may stick your head in the sand as you wish.

"It would be much more entertaining to see you try to defend the myriad lynchings, mass murders, rapes, destruction of property, theft, et al. committed in the name of Jesus and/or the Christian God by a few deluded followers. Ask the Incas, Mayans, and the families of those lynched in the American South what they think about the phrase "They will know we are Christian by our love."

I can't speak for Don, but if Christians were doing it TODAY, I would be the first to take up arms.

That said, because you agree that that past behavior was wrong, would YOU have taken up arms against it when it was happening?

If not, you are a coward. If you would have,

Then why do you make excuses for another religion that commands rapings of teenagers as punishment for their brother's acts?

The failure to adhere to religious morality in no way diminshes its excellence in preserving life and fostering happiness.

Must be why the religious police in Saudi Arabia carry whips.
