WASHINGTON The recent arrest of a Palestinian man from Florida has convinced U.S. officials that a network of al Qaeda operatives exists in the United States, CBS reported on Thursday.
It said Adham Hassoun, arrested earlier this month, was an "important link" to accused al Qaeda member American Jose Padilla, as well as other groups based in the United States who may be awaiting orders for future attacks.
"A number of people are under surveillance. None is believed to have had a supporting role in the Sept. 11 attacks. Some may have been slated to assist Zacarias Moussaoui," it said.
Moussaoui has been charged in connection with the Sept. 11 hijacking attacks. He has been referred to as the suspected 20th hijacker.
But the CBS report said senior officials, whom it did not name, now believe Moussaoui was, in fact, not scheduled to be part of the Sept. 11 attacks but was to have carried out a separate, unknown mission.
"U.S. officials have collected intelligence that appears to confirm what they have feared most since Sept. 11, that al Qaeda is still active in the United States," CBS said.
It reported that Padilla was apparently expecting help from such a network when he returned to the United States last month on an alleged target-scouting mission.
U.S. officials said Padilla was apparently enroute to meet Hassoun when the latter man was arrested, the network said. Hassoun was arrested after his communication with Padilla was monitored.
Hassoun, a 13-year U.S. resident, is now being held on an immigration charge at an Immigration and Naturalization Service facility.
The al Qaeda network of Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden is blamed by Washington for the Sept. 11 hijacked plane attacks that killed more than 3,000 people in New York, Washington ad Pennsylvania.

Dismiss the charges against Moussaui and stick him in the brid as an illegal combatant where he can chill for a really long time. No international stage, no speeches, nothin.

Not surprised Al Qaeda is still operating in the US, but according to some (even Freepers) 85% of the non Jihadist supporting Muslims shouldn't pay for the 15% who do. Hence, we should not limit their immigration or activities here.

It's not the "20th hijacker" that we should be worried about right now. He's on ice for the time being. What we SHOULD be worried about are the five other arabs who were on another plane after all air traffic was grounded. I can't remember which airport this was, but I remember reading articles on FR about another plane at a US airport with 5 arabs on board who became very upset that the plane wasn't going to be taking off. Airport security and the local police didn't know what to look for, so these 5 got away without any questions asked. These guys are probably still on the loose, planning god knows what.

My wife and I met a man in Big Sur who was flying out of Dallas/Ft. Worth on 9/11. Dallas to SFO, I believe. A cargo net broke, or something to that effect and the flight was delayed for a little over an hour. By the time the problem was fixed, the attacks had taken place and all flights were grounded.
According to the man, there were 4 Arabs on the flight, nervously pacing, fidgeting, sitting down, standing up throughout the entire delay. When the flight was cancelled, they couldn't get out of there fast enough.
I wonder what their target was.
I wonder where the hell they are today.

Last year aftger 9/11 Bob Woodward wrote in the Washington Post that there were five known AlQaeda cells still operational in the US. Woodward quoted unnamed senior FBI officals who told Woodward that the FBI decided to continue to monitor the cells rather than move against them. THis FBI policy is foolish and could be catastrophic.
The article unintentionally covers up the fact that this is the FBI policy by stating the officials were saying their worst fears and suspicions have been realized when the FBI has known all along about these cells. THe FBI is still lying about the cells and the FBI policy.
Also the FBI informant for six years, Ali Mohammed the Egyptian and Bin Laden lieutenant, set up and trained the AlQaeda cells in the US that the FBI is still monitoring.

I remember well that story, and have kept it in mind as the months pass. I presume they are laying low, awaiting their turn for 'glory'.
However, there have been many arrests/detentions made that we don't the specifics of, and these vermin may very well be in custody.
I presume, also, that I don't know the half of it, no matter how much I read the news, scan the wires.
