Men won't commit to marriage because they enjoy a sexually active single life in a social climate that doesn't push them to marry, a new report says. Young men are indeed "commitment phobic," which is bad news for young women who want build a family before they get too old, said researchers Barbara Dafoe Whitehead and David Popenoe, who run the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University. "The median age of first marriage for men has reached 27, the oldest age in our nation's history," Mr. Popenoe said. "If this trend of men waiting to marry continues, it is likely to clash with the timing of marriage and childbearing for the many young women who hope to marry and bear children before they begin to face problems associated with declining fertility," he said. There are several specific reasons for why young men are avoiding marriage, Mr. Popenoe and Mrs. Whitehead said yesterday in their 2002 State of Our Unions report, titled, "Why Men Won't Commit: Exploring Young Men's Attitudes About Sex, Dating and Marriage." The report is based on interviews with 60 single men, 25 to 33, who live in four parts of the country. Primarily, young men are enjoying a sexually active single life

Well unless it's with each other, there's another half to this story.

"Marriage a thing of the past? Boo-frikkin'-who. They created the problem, and they can live alone with the consequences. By the way, check out South America, Europe and the ex-Soviet Union. Because once you go, mac - you don't go back."

Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

He's twenty-seven. Someone his own age is young and unless she's a bona fide troll would be considered a trophy wife by many.

You're absolutely correct about that,at least in the sense you mean.

But comments like the ones you posted only serve to make me feel better about the fact that it is better to be alone and childless than to be hooked up with a selfish loser who would make a terrible father.

What goes around, comes around, ctonious. If you haven't discovered that already, you will.

Well, feel good about it, feel bad about it. The beauty of it is I don't care what users like you think I should be thinking, or wanting. Competition is a wonderful thing. Now go bother someone who cares what you think.

Glad I struck a nerve.

"I couldn't afford to buy or maintain horses."

I waited until all my ducks were in a row before I married. By the time the "I Dos" were said, I was too broke to pay attention. : )

I would say that the likelyhood of the daughter being like the mother is higher, but it is fair to judge a prospective husband on his father.

Though my wife wishs I was more like my father.

Being 27, and single with no prospective wife in line, I would think it is safe to assume that several years at a minimum will pass before he gets married. So, best case scenario we are looking at early 30's, but more likely mid to later 30's as the date of his marriage.

Unless he gets a foreign import from a catalog.

"Nope. Some guys are getting enough. At forty-six, my hubby is quite happy making love about three times a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less...although I'm beginning to see the "more" diminishing as he ages."

LOL........well, I DO like your attitude, Mb. :) I, too, am 46, married over 24 years...........but three times a week? I'd die of "starvation". Make that "per day" and you're closer to the mark. :) (I can hear it now........"now I KNOW he's lyin'!!!...........)

I'm 41, and I want kids, so it's already too late to find someone my age.

Many men are doing the same thing women do ---waiting too long to marry and have children. The chances of having a baby for an over-40 woman goes down --but the same happens to men because of a shortage of 25 year olds who are looking to marry 40+ men ---most will marry within their age group and there's a new trend of women marrying younger men.

My 10th grade biology teacher once told the class, and directed it at the guys, that if you have a girlfriend and down the road want to get married get to know the mother. She will turn into her mother.

That's the same thing my Dad would say ---you don't look at the girl, you look at the girl's mother because that's what you'll have in 20 years. You can take it further and apply it to men but you also have to look at the other parent--- look at the girl's father (you'll always be compared with him) and same for women ---you have to look at the guy's mother because you'll be compared with her.
