When I was there in Fairbanks for three full summers in the 60's, I don't think we had more than a dozen 80 degree days, unlike your saying on one trip there it was so hot the asphalt was melting!
Coming from Florida, I LONGED for a day when I could wear shorts; and in winter actually thought everything would be all right if it would get UP TO ZERO!! - LOL!

The WORST thing about summer in Fairbanks was not the heat, but that D*MNED SUNSHINE all night! Dang. We'd go to bed at 1 am with the sun shining in our eyes and wake up at 6 am with the sun shining in our eyes! (This, for uninitiated freepers and canteeners, is why Alaskans can grow 90-pound cabbages and turnips as big as baby's heads...)
