An engine block will stop most any commonly carried handgun round.

Get behind the front tire, over the hood. Between the engine and the tire it offers a lot of protection.
On some models you can use the rear tire, but it's not as good as the front ones.

Bullets can hit a seat and be stopped. It can hit anything in the car and be stopped or redirected. It can also be slowed down.
