SHOW LOW - Two huge wildfires raging through northeastern Arizona have exploded to a total of nearly 300,000 acres, fire officials said Sunday morning, with the larger blaze expected to hit Show Low by Sunday afternoon or Monday morning.

Noting the shifting winds and the intensity of the inferno, operations section chief Buck Wickham cautioned, "That's a projection, and this fire has done nothing that we've projected yet."

It would devastate whats on the non-fire side of it, but the fire will hit it anyhow. What would the effect be on the fire? Blow it back? Fan it? Disperse it?

Seems like it would at least destroy all of the fuel ahead of the leading edge. I still think it is a good idea, but I am not a Daisycutter expert, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Why don't they use those new cave busting bombs that suck the oxygen out. That would kill parts of the fire, maybe

Another excellent idea. How about if we develop a Halon bomb for these situations? (Halon is a gas that eliminates oxygen.)

That red dust from the tanker planes seems so useless.

Amen. My husband keeps saying, "this is what controlled burns are for." Environmentalists and political correctness are two of my hot buttons (no pun intended). I will say no more.

>June **23,** 2002

This is not good.  23 = biblical number of Death.

>Fire Chief Ben Owens said everybody who wanted to leave town is gone. As for the others, "Maybe today when we're out there, we'll ask those people for their next of kin."

"Remember Lot's wife" by J.C. Ryle.  See also, Pr 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

>Gov. Jane Hull on Sunday said the fires have been described as "a great train coming toward us."

With its own headlights.

>She added, "It is not in control."

God is in control.  He gives each one according to their works, starts judgment at the house of God and the place is currently in the kiln.  Praise God that He can distinguish the righteous from the wicked.  That means a Lot!  Why do the righteous run?  We see why.  The fire and the flood try each man's works to see what's inside.  Lord, uphold the righteous!  May they buy gold tried in the fire.  Rev 3.

>Wind gusts, a longstanding drought, bone-dry trees and vegetation and rough terrain have conspired to create what fire officials describe as an out-of-control monster. The fire dragon has breathed flames from treetop to treetop...

The writer left out "falling into the hands of an angry God."  Today would be a good day to repent.  We of course have to remember that Repentance is not up for grabs any time one wants it; that would put man in control.  God gives it (Ac 5:31; 2Ti 2:25) when one seeks Him with a whole heart, not a divided heart, and puts the Lord first, not trying to add Him in with one's other gods of Mammon, Hedonism, Greed, Sex, Materialism and the like.  He can also not give Repentance.  See Will you inherit Psalm 91 or Proverbs 1:20-33? -- Time is short.

Rodeo = round-up.

rodeo (ro´dê-o´, ro-dâ´o) noun
plural rodeos
1. A public competition or exhibition in which skills such as riding broncos or roping calves are displayed.
2. A cattle roundup.
3. An enclosure for keeping cattle that have been rounded up.
[Spanish, corral, rodeo, from rodear, to surround, from rueda, wheel, from Latin rota.]

>UB, Channel 5 (CBS affiliate) just reported that a wildfire has sprung up near Tucson. Have you heard anything?

That's amazing.  I just did a Mapquest check for the mileage from Slow Lo to Tucson and it said it was 190.96 miles.  I recall reading about the big Tillamook Burn forest fire in Oregon in 1933 which had ash falling 500 miles out to sea.  It was comprised of 4 fires, the first in 1933, and then 6 years apart in what was called "The 6 years jinx" -- 1939, 1945 and 1951.  Here are the stats:

Tillamook Burn Summary

Totals: All Four Fires Board Feet Acres
Perimeter area   360,882
Unburned area within perimeter   5,946
Burned area   354,936
Timber killed
*Enough for over one million five-room homes
13,102,917,000

Source: Oregon Department of Forestry. Tillamook Burn to Tillamook State Forest.

Does anyone know how that compares in size with what is happening in the West now?

Am wondering if politics is creating reluctance to issue forth an adequate National Guard response.

SHOW LOW, Arizona (CNN) :"Hull and U.S. Forest Service chief Dale Bosworth, visiting the site, said the devastating fire should be a wake-up call to environmentalists and governments to change the way they manage the nation's forests. "

Also, the story of the colorado ranger-womans' 'love letter' starting a fire seems awfully contrived, begging the question: Is she a decoy FEMA is using to cover up public awareness of an investigation that these fires are potential terrorist activity?

One of my thoughts after 9-11 was that terrorism needs no intricate methodology if you are willing to sacrifice some pizzazz - you could wreak havoc with simple arson or random urban murder for a very long time before being stopped.

Question Sunday on CSPAN Wash. Journal was "Are the terrorist warnings working? How should they be different?"

One caller, a 'simple-folk' kinda guy, made an excellent case for the 'lack of effect or overvalue of effect' of the warnings compared to the actual risk or cost of a successful attack-

"The keyword is TERROR here"

"You can't stop crazy people, whats gunna happen is gunna happen."

So yes, I do think America needs educating on how to emotionally cope with the warnings, and I do think the Media are forced to take on a bedside manner of paranoia with the public because they do not know how to act otherwise without appearing to downplay the seriousness of the WOT.

Catch-22.

That's great news!!! You must feel so relieved! Last reports I heard from Show Low were that things didn't get as bad today as they had feared and the fire's approach to Show Low had slowed down. It had only barely reached the west side of Show Low the last I heard. The woman reporting from Show Low just now said she can see the red glow in the distance. Fire is moving slowly and has not reached the community of Torayon (sp?) which is an upscale area on the west side. Fire has gone through Linden though...

Haven't heard anymore about Tucson. I think they must have been talking about a smaller (150 acres) fire to the north of Tucson that officials were keeping an eye on.

Thank you for the ping.

These fires are very scary. I used to live in Malibu, Ca. and we had to evacuate three times because of fires. My heart pounds now hard just remembering how it felt, watching the choppers and other planes over head and the sky so black in the daytime it was the same as night time.Tall flames so close to our home.whew..very scary.

Prayers for everyone there and the firefighters.

Torreon is near the U.S. 60 /260 juncture (just south). It is built around a Desert Troon (I believe) golf course. A friend of ours owns a piece of property in there. Very expensive development. Good to know it's still OK as other friends have a home just up the road (but not in Torreon).
