Pastor Beaten After Blunt Eulogy Reverend Calls Deceased 'Drunkard And A Fornicator'
POSTED: 10:16 p.m. EDT June 21, 2002
LOXLEY, Ala. -- Authorities in Loxley, Ala., are investigating the alleged beating of a preacher by funeral mourners who didn't like his blunt eulogy.
Glynis Bethel told The Associated Press that her husband -- the Rev. Orlando Bethel -- was attacked during a June 14 funeral and dragged out of the church.
That's because Bethel told mourners the deceased was in Hell and that they were headed the same way.
The dead man was Glynis Bethel's uncle.
Orlando Bethel referred to him as a "drunkard and a fornicator."
Glynis Bethel, who's also a preacher, says "the fornicators didn't like what he said so they got up and beat him."
She says police didn't make any arrests, so she and her husband -- who may have a broken nose -- are taking out warrants.
Someone told me that a funeral is not for the dead, but for the living.
If a preacher does not want to perform the expected service he should decline the invitation.
And if all you want is a mamby-pamby service, then don't invite a preacher.
If the deceased isn't worthy of a "christian burial," you can either conduct a neutral ceremony or decline the job. This guy clearly demonstrated that he's got shit for brains and no social diplomacy. Toothless hick idiot. Should've hired bodyguards.
When our mother dies, we do not plan to have a memorial service. As Flower said, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
I thought that was part of Life 101.
outstanding.
I didn't know that Ted Kennedy died ....
Sorry to hear that your situation suggests that option, but better silent dignity than crocodile tears or something unpleasant.
They did the same kind of things to the prophets of old. Ha!
Uh-oh.
I guess we should be thankful O.J. just wants a ban.
I remember this story. Another account said that they shut the PA system down on the guy but he pulled out a bullhorn and continued.
This guy has to be a Calvinist!
.
Good point, but the preacher should have informed the people up front that he was going to tell it like it is.
I went to be funeral of a wonderful Christian lady once where the jerk of a preacher strongly implied the mourners, most of whom he had never met, were perverts and thieves just to add punch to his altar call. Some of these guys are so bent on "saving a soul" that they have no clue they are driving people away in droves.
If you're following me, I'm calling a cop.
"Know your audience."
Can we book the Rev. Orlando Bethel to preside at Clinton's funeral?
Laughing in spite of myself....
They are both idiots. Even as a mere ministry student I know better than to pull this kind of stuff at someone's funeral. If, in your opinion the person's standing with God did not meet requirements for entry into heaven, then what you should do is dwell on whatever positive thing they did in their life. No one is so bad you can't say something good. If not, then best keep it REAL short, preacher.
PS Women preachers are not authorized by the Bible.
Well while this paster may be right about the guy being a drunk and a fornicator, he did step over the line... God chooses who gets to heaven and who goes to hell, not any pastor, priest or even Pope. It is beyond presumptive to make the judgement that the deceased is in hell. To presume knowlege of anyones final destination is frankly blasphemous.
This is HYSTERICAL...c'mon everyone get a sense of humour. Would'nt you want to be fly on the wall for this funeral? LOL!
