Bernie isn't the only socialist in Congress,
but he's openly socialist,
which to me is a synonym for communist.

Fine, allow communism to exist. Just don't defend your party's politicians when they embrace it. We're all free to choose communism if we're stupid enough. The people elected to office aren't free to do so because they took an oath to the US Constitution and the Constitution doesn't contain any communism.
