Well, it seems like somebody, namely
Democratic stalwart Joe Browder, another leading Everglades environmentalist and a former Carter administration official, leaked information about the airport to Nader in order to ratchet up the pressure on Gore.

wanted to get his name in the paper as being influential. Otherwise, I don't think the writer has an agenda so much as an obvious point of view -- that Greenies cost Algore the election.

My pleasure, and thanks for your analysis. But, my question remains to you, AmishDude - what took the WP so LONG to report this? I'm not alleging a plot to sabatoge him, but I am certainly questioning why the WP did not report this at any time in the past - in 2002, 2001, or Nov 2000. Are they that slow at the keyboard???? :)!
The fine folks over at the W.P. have been preoccupied of late:

from www.OperationLaugh.com

This rather limited worldview has (understandably) somewhat restricted their analytical abilities.

LOL, I'm glad someone around here still reads the WP. Most of us quit after they filed suit against FR, which couldn't have helped the number of hits on their website.

Nice to know that we're not missing much!

I guess when you tell every other person you come in contact with "to go [expletive] themselves" ...

Is this the same thing Joyclyn Elders was "marketing"?

You honestly think Gore lost the US Presidency because of an arcane argument over an airport location? That's the most laughable thing I've ever heard.

Well then, ha ha ha. :)
I guess you don't live in FL. But, I do. And, I noticed FL was not in Gore's colunm after the election. So, Gore lost FL. And, in Election 2000, losing FL (and TN, and WV) certainly did cost Al Gore the election. Glad you just now woke up!

Those of us who peruse FR on a daily basis are news junkies, but 95% of the electorate are not. The average voter had no idea that there was an airport controversy, and more importantly, they had no idea which side of the argument Al Gore stood on.

Wrong that no one else knew. As I accurately stated in my editorial above, every major environmental group in the country had expressed an opinion on this issue. Clinton opposed this airport. Gore did not oppose it as a presidential candidate.

In addition, several of the 350+ FR posts on my Jan 9, 2002 FR editorial (linked above), from the average conservative voter, outside the state of FL, knew about the Homestead Airport issue -- and was following it.

Furthermore, other FR posters also claimed that on another thread I posted about this issue.

Granted, there were not a whole lot of FR posters who said that, but I was very surprised that a handful of FR posters across the country did in fact know before I told them.

(For the record, I'm a news junkie and I never heard of this airport till today.)

So, "for the record" -- you may not be the news junkie you think you are, no offense to you, or, you may have no interest or concern in the environment -- which, by the way, is NOT the case with FL voters.

BTW, I do appreciate your post, and since you claim to be a news junkie, I will post a link for you, to come, which I hope you will read -- and, check out the FR posters comments on both the link I post, and, my Jan 9th FR editorial linked above. If you bother to read everything, you may be quite surprised....

And, "arcane" does not accruately describe the argument. According to the very in-depth and comprehensive piece written by the local jounralist in the New Miami Times, this was an on-going, heated, intense argument -- and tensions were mounting daily.

An excerpt from the above article, "Collision Course":

....[FL] Environmentalists find it ironic that, with regard to this subject [the proposed airport in the Everglades], their strongest allies have often been Republicans while their fiercest opponents have been Democrats. Outgoing Republican Sen. Connie Mack, for example, opposes the development of a commercial airport at the air base. One of Mack's Republican colleagues, Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio, tried to guarantee that the proposed airport would not hinder plans to restore the Everglades.

On the other hand, redeveloping the [Homestead, FL Airforce] base as a commercial airport has been supported over the years by Graham and fellow Democrats such as Penelas, Congresswoman Carrie Meek, former Gov. Lawton Chiles, Senator-elect Bill Nelson while he was state insurance commissioner, and State Sen. Daryl Jones
[Note: Jones is now a Dem candidate for FL gov 2002]...

[Also, note: the USA Homestead Airport Base in FL had been devastated by Hurricane Andrew in the early 1990's.]

Thanks, Lancey Howard. But, other than supporting Gov Bush in this election year, I must confess I do not consider myself a political junkie, nor have I ever been one. The simple truth is: I love to laugh. And, this Washington Post article had me rolling this morning! ROTFLMAO!!!!

But, if my nature desire to laugh, or, my preference for Gov Bush as the winner of the FL gov race inspires anyone here, GREAT! :)!

As long as you don't mind being 1-1/2 years or 20 months late in getting your news -- no, you're not missing a beat at the WP! :)

summer, God love you, but you're crazy. You're missing the forest because you're obsessing on this one tree. You've taken one issue that is important to you, and made the assumption that it was important to everyone else. It wasn't.

And frankly, it doesn't matter what you wrote in January of 2002, because the election was held in Nov., 2000. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Look at the news sources you are quoting: the Washington Post, and NPR. Doesn't that tell you something?

These sources want you to believe that Gore lost Florida because he lost the environmental vote; that he wasn't liberal enough. But you of all people should know that Gore lost because he was too liberal. On question after question, Soc. Sec., taxes, the environment, the military, Elian, Bush was closer to the mainstream than Al Gore was.

Don't buy into the liberal spin.

BTW, I just went to your link, and the thread generated absolutely no insight into how the Everglades airport issue might, or might not, have affected Florida voting in Nov., 2000. (It too was written after the election, with the benefit of hindsight.)

made the assumption that it was important to everyone else. It wasn't.

Frederich, On the above point, you and I actually agree.

However, whatever would happen to the Homestead Airforce Base was VERY IMPORTANT to the people in FLORIDA, especially those who lived nearby that land -- and, to those who live near or care about the Everglades.

The whole country was not losing sleep over it. But, here in FL, during many protracted and angry legal battles, plenty of FL voters DID lose sleep over it.
It was in a sense a LOCAL issue -- but, it involved FEDERAL land.

So, true, not everyone cared -- however, for you to brush it off, as Al Gore did, to his detriment, would make you appear just as foolish as him. As it turned out, he lost the White House over this issue. :)!
