Nationalists see the individual as a kinsman, sustained by the people and community, which nurtures and protects him, and with which he is proud to identify.

Would this be the society where the individuals gladly don their brown shirt as opposed to the liberal one, where brown shirts remain optional?

I think one can live in a society that puts individual liberties very high on it's agenda while instilling a sense of community. Example: driving down the road with a bag of trash (ie. McDonalds) one may toss it out the window or hang on to it and recycle it later. To the nationalist it would be unthinkable to toss the bag. To the liberal, it would simply remain an option, though not 'the' option.

I would save the bag. Me and my kids have to live here.
If more liberals 'choose' to toss their bags, the country would become the typical slum areas we see the liberals living in today, and plagues would abound from the filth.

The basis for the successful political life of any nation on earth is a common language, history and culture, which create "a people" sufficiently cohesive enough for representative democracy, its institutions and democratic values to be able to be effective.
