PALM BEACH COUNTY TERM LIMITS COMMITTEE June 19, 2002

COMMISSIONERS ON THE RECORD...
At Tuesday night's Palm Beach County Commission meeting meeting, commissioner Mary McCarty proposed that the commission CEASE an legal effort to try to keep the term limits referendum off the ballot. Commissioner Tony Masilotti voted with her, but the proposal was defeated 4-2, as Burt Aaronson, Carol Roberts, Addie Greene, and Karen Marcus voted to continue the effort.
Commissioner McCarty deserves credit for putting this up for a vote. While there certainly was politicking all around, this vote brought the issue out in the open and puts on record those responsible for trying to use legal maneuvering to prevent a vote. Thanks also for Tony Masilotti for seconding McCarty on this one.
Whether or not they favor term limits, both McCarty and Masilotti voted to allow the people to decide. By voting to pursue legal obstruction, Aaronson, Roberts, Greene and Marcus are demonstrating what lengths they will go to deny voters that opportunity.

WE HAVE OVER 40,000 SIGNATURES VALIDATED SO FAR...
...and the county still has not checked about 10,000 or so that we have turned in. We expect to turn in close to 1,000. Recall that we need 45,969 valid to be on the ballot.
Ironically, we have to pay the county 10 cents per signature to validate these petitions, or more than $5,500 in total. At the same time, the county is using public resources to try to keep it of the ballot!
Remember, we still need more signed petitions as a cushion to discourage a challenge. We can slow down now, but not stop!

COMMISSION CANDIDATE SIGNS PETITION!
County Commission Candidate Steve Nichol enthusiastically signed the term limits petition the other day and reiterated his view that "eight is enough." Even if the commission is successful in keeping the issue away from voters, he said he will step down after eight years.
He is currently collecting signatures to put his name on the ballot in November. To get one, send him an email at snichol123@aol.com.

PLEASE HELP!
PLEASE make a financial contribution to the Committee to help promote -- and perhaps defend! -- the term limits referendum. We want to print bumper stickers and yard signs and have some debt to retire from the petition drive. We need your help to move into the next phase of this campaign.
PLEASE MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO: the "PBC Term Limits Committee" and mail to 316 N. Country Club Drive, Atlantis, FL 33462.
If you are considering becoming a voting committee member ($1,000 minimum contribution), please call or email.
Thank you!

The State of Florida already has this 8 year limit.
Several Freepers in the county have helped out in gathering petitions. It's an issue that almost 80% of the voters support, regardless of party affiliation.
The interesting aspect of this is that various County Commissioners have been fighting against this petition and using County resources, primarliy legal, to fight it on very dubuious legal grounds.
It appears that the necessary number of valid petitions will be had but the shenanigans by the County - afterall, this is Palm Beach County - may yet not allow it on the ballot this November.
P.S. You may remember Carol Roberts from the vote counting fiasco back in Election 2000.
