As a non-theist, that is, one who couldn't care less what religious folks choose to believe (as long as its not foisted upon me), they can put all the crosses they want in Manhattan. And baby Buddhas and Vishnu statues and Ra idols or whatever. none of it means a thing to me. Of course, the Port authority owns the site so thats the government and I'm not sure how "legal" that will be (notice: I said LEGAL, not "right.") and the owner of the buildings is Jewish, so the cross is an affront to him.

So, ONCE AGAIN, religion has become a divider on yet another issue. For someone like me, it gets rather tiresome.

Ron Barrier, national spokesman for the group, stressed that Muslims, Hindus and other non-Christians were killed in the attacks as well. What about them? he asked. "Are we going to turn the site of the WTC into a religious shrine with competing religious slogans, symbols and displays?

Let's appease the atheists by letting them place their own religious symbol at the WTC memorial site!

" the prime motivating factor in the faith-based attack of Sept. 11."

Anyone else notice how they connected the phrase "faith-based" with the terrorist atrocity of Sept. 11th?

As they say in those PGA commercials, "These guys are good" -- and totally reprehensible.

The cross still divides. It is a symbol that makes men choose like no other symbol.

"You can't take government funds to promote religion

Not all religions. You can certainly use government funds to promote the atheist faith.

Getting back to the original topic...I'm not angry at American Atheists for doing this. I feel sorry for them. This is not a First Amendment issue. Period. Preserving the girder cross on site is not going to establish Christianity as a state religion. Nor is it going to restrict anybody's right to freely exercise their own religion or lack thereof. That cross is a memento of the buildings which used to stand there and by extension, the people (in the buildings, on the planes and on the ground) who died there. Anybody who knows that, and whose first thoughts still run to whether preserving it on site would be a civil rights violation is so withered in their soul (or psyche, if you don't believe in the soul) as to be pitied, not flamed.
