Atheists Protest Ground Zero Cross

Decry plan to use symbol as part of 9-11 memorial

:

The organization American Atheists is protesting a proposal to use a large steel cross found in the rubble of the World Trade Center in a memorial to victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Describing itself as a "nationwide movement which defends the civil rights of nonbelievers," the group said in a statement yesterday that use of the cross in a government-funded monument "would violate the separation of church and state, be insensitive to those victims who had no religious beliefs and would incredibly pay homage to religion – the prime motivating factor in the faith-based attack of Sept. 11."

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation is the local agency in charge of planning for the rebuilding of the site.

Ed Malloy, president of the Building and Construction Trades Council and a board member of the agency, has asked that the cross be made a permanent part of any future memorial.

According to the New York Daily News, construction workers, firefighters, police officers and family members have held weekly Sunday services at the site of the cross since Sept. 11.

"We're hoping it will stay right where it is and become part of any permanent memorial," Malloy was quoted as saying in the Daily News.

Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists objects to the possibility that the cross might be used in a taxpayer-supported project.

"This is an inappropriate use of taxpayer money," she said in the statement, "You can't take government funds to promote religion, especially sectarian religion in the form of a cross or any other religious symbol."

Johnson added that any memorial to the victims of the attacks "should bring Americans together, not divide them on the basis or religion or anything else."

Ron Barrier, national spokesman for the group, stressed that Muslims, Hindus and other non-Christians were killed in the attacks as well.

What about them? he asked. "Are we going to turn the site of the WTC into a religious shrine with competing religious slogans, symbols and displays? Any monument to the victims, and those who helped in the aftermath of Sept. 11 should be tasteful, as well as a unifying statement about America and humanity.

"Christian symbols are as inappropriate as a Muslim crescent or some other religious label," Barrier said.

Construction worker Frank Silecchia happened upon the perfectly symmetrical cross in the midst of the WTC wreckage just a few days after the attacks. It was standing straight, 20-feet high, surrounded by many smaller crosses.

"When I first saw it, it took my heart," Silecchia said. "It helped me heal the burden of my despair, and gave me closure on the whole catastrophe."

Said WorldNetDaily columnist Ann Coulter in an October column : "The cross at Ground Zero was not simply the cross beams remaining from an existing building. It was formed out of beams from Building One plunging, splitting and crashing into Building Six."

"There's no symmetry to anything down there," an FBI chaplain said at the time, "except those crosses."

Johnson said that her group would go to court if necessary to challenge the use of government money for the placement of any religious symbol at the WTC site.

I'm Jewish, and I would also have a problem with a Christian cross being used in a public memorial. Since it would be hard to find out what each victim believed in to make sure everyone is represented, it would be easier to make the whole thing as non-demoninational as possible to avoid offending anyone of a different faith. I'm sure some Muslims died too, but I don't hear any calls for a crescent to be at the site.

Do you have any evidence to support your assertions wrt the existence of a god, the divinity of Christ or the ressurrection? Shouting your assertions over and over again does not give them any additional credibility.

"This country was founded by those seeking religous freedom. The cross the workers found is a ideal tribute to the fallen, and the atheists who don't like it need to remember that this country's strength in it's beliefs in the freedom of everyone is what gives them the ability to denounce God. If they don't like it, they should try shouting "there is no allah" in mecca. God Bless America."

Bears repeating. BUMP!

Well, in that case, I propose the following WTC Memorial:

You know what? That would be entirely appropriate. How about turning it into a park with pictures of all the victims where you can go to sit and think. Or even better, they can bring back the searchlights. I thought that was extremely tasteful and powerful.

Because the cross is better. If someone is so hyperventalatingly anxious to be offended, they can look the other way.

Why is the cross better? Apparently at least one person here disagrees.

"Atheism is not a religion. If you disagree, please provide the name of the deity that atheists worship"

They are certainly as zealous in their extreme belief in a lack of deities as any religious zealot I've ever met. They are as organized as any major religion, and as dedicated to creating "converts" as any religious zealot. They worship no deity as stringently as some worship A deity. I see no difference between their behavior and that of pro-(religion______here) extremists.

For the sake of argument...and because this is their most common argument, how about I accuse them of worshipping GOVERNMENT FUNDING?

Just do it. It's time to ignore these anti everything do nothings. Defy them to remove the crosses! Civil disobedience from the right.

So do you claim that your statements apply to all atheists?

So am I too assume that since some Christians are ignorant, ill-mannered trailer trash that all Christians are?

Make that two people.

I think Maya Lin, the architect who designed the Vietnam memorial should be tapped for this project. The Vietnam Memorial is an increidbly moving, non-denominational, non-representational memorial. It is overwhelmingly effective yet completely non-objectionable, despite its controversial beginnings.

...And can you guarantee there will be no one "offended" by the searchlights? I'm Jewish too...and I say the cross should stay, as not onlt a symbol of strength and unity, but AS AN HISTORICAL ARTIFACT from the greatest tragedy the United States has suffered in it's history. It is AMERICAN HISTORY. Like the flag which hung at the WTC, like the photograph of the firefighters hoisting a flag at ground zero, it should be protected and preserved. Like the Liberty Bell. Like the Constitution. Like the Declaration of Independence. Like Bowman's Tower. Like the Franklin Institute. Like Washington's crossing...etc. OUR history. OURS.

I really wish all these easily "offended" people would lay off our history.

"So do you claim that your statements apply to all atheists?"

Only the ones who are as anxious to preach their worship of no deity upon my sensibilities as those who constantly preach the messages of their particular sects or cults.

1) In what way to atheists actively "worship no diety".

2) If what you said does not apply to all atheists, could it be possible that it isn't actually a defining quality of atheism and that atheism might not be a religion?

I find it offensive. Cold and hard and empty. Names of my loved ones are included in it...and I try very hard to appreciate the asthetic value which I know (must) have been intended...so far, without success, though I leave flowers there every few years when I visit it. Perhaps it offends me because I have always believed that it was exactly the cold, hard emptiness of the thing...the absolute LACK of any PARTICULAR asthetic value...which offends me. But that's MY problem...no one else's...it's now a piece of American History which shouls also be preserved and protected.

How about turning it into a park with pictures of all the victims where you can go to sit and think.

How about everyone stops suggesting that New York should turn sixteen acres of valuable real estate into some useless and macabre green space?

The memorial should be in the form of a museum, where the inclusion of the pictures of the 2800+ victims AND the Ground Zero cross would both be entirely appropriate. This is for history. Leaving out the cross, which is a real part of the story of the recovery effort, is every bit as bad as changing the races of the three firemen who were photographed raising the flag. It's as bad as leaving out the name of a victim.

I see we're thinking along the same lines today; you posted yours while I was writing mine...
