Sen. Schumer wants fed. gov. to develop plan to control Canada geese population (IDIOT ALERT!)

(Hempstead, Long Island-AP) -- The overpopulation of Canada geese on Long Island has caught the attention of U-S Senator Charles Schumer, who wants the federal government to do something.

Schumer is calling on the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a pilot program to solve the geese population on Long Island. The Canada geese have become year-round residents of parks and lake areas, causing problem with droppings on ballfields and play areas.

Schumer has written to Fish and Wildlife director Steve Williams to explore humane methods to control the geese population using non-lethal methods. Schumer said Nassau and Suffolk County executives will pick communities for the pilot program.

Some of the ideas to curb the geese population include:

- planting tall grasses that impair the visibility of the geese and make them feel vulnerable to predators;

- discourage people from feeding the birds;

- physical barriers such as fences around lakes and ponds to block access to the water;

- addling eggs so babies don't hatch;

- spray the grasses with repellents that make the grass taste bad;

- using plastic owls, moving scarecrows, noise machines and other sound effects to scare the geese;

- using specially trained dogs to chase the geese from the parks;

"these vile birds are a royal pain."

Wrong! They are a tasty, succulent, juicy, treat put on this earth to be enjoyed by man if prepared correctly.

If the government would buy me ammo for my shotgun, I'd solve the local goose problem and feed some homeless in the bargain.

Well gee now Chuck, what are you going to do about the 50 zillion seagulls that are in my part of NY, hanging around parking lots you can't eat out at McDonalds the birds beg you for your french fries. C'mon, Chuck, where's your priorities? Oh I know, you can't answer that, you're too busy holding hearings on baseball players using steroids. And after that, it's on to the problems regarding the drop in the frog population in Central America. You guys have so many important things to tend to in the Senate, you can't be bothered with real problems, like how to keep terrorists out of the country.

Most of the Canadian geese I've encountered as bold as brass around humans. They can be easily snared and beheaded with a pair of shears. No firearms necessary. You do have to be prepared to tolerate a few hard bites if you choose to hunt them in this manner.

I think part of the problem is that these "Canada" geese are covered under the migratory bird treaty.
So, it is more than a simple US government regulation, that you can't "wack them."
And I think this is even though most of these geese never go to Canada anymore.

We have an abundance of lakes in Tennessee and have a big problem with these critters. The parks bordering the lakes are knee deep in Canadian goose poop, and that's no fun. The problem is with the bleeding hearts who feed these poachers. And they're protected. What we need is open season.

The geese have taken to congregating where people are. As for their droppings, imagine a ball field or parking lot with a hundred 3cm droppings per square meter.

So because of government regulation prohibiting killing these vile animals,

Part of the problem is the numbers. Another big problem is that due to humans creating year-round habitats for them (as a side-effect), they don't migrate...so geese that would be widelty distributed instead reside in good-sized flocks and never leave.

Why does UPCHUCK feel that this is a US gov't problem, and not a NY problem?

In part because of Federal laws enforcing agreements with Canada on Migratory birds. Not that he's addressing it in the right manner...
