Repares and painting, siding and roofing when worn.
Electric, water, cable, lawn mower, ...... Repairs and painting? Roofing?? Actually maintaining the lawn/yard??? C'mon, that satellite dish and brand-new car over there cost way too much for them to be bothered with such trivialities ....
(Pardon the sardonic tone, but I've seen the way hand-out folks *take care* of the property).

Dear Registered,
First of all, I really like all of your graphics, you really crack me up most of the time.
Second of all, I understand the opposition that many have to Bush's increases in spending, especially on social programs, but let me just throw out this little idea that I have. If you notice, all of his programs increase responsibility and accountability, like on education with higher standards and more testing, and this program where now there are loans and downpayments instead of simple rent subsidies. At first, the spending will necessarily go up, but in time, as the new programs are found to be more successful than the old, the old ones can be phased out, and the new ones should by design be less expensive than the old...rent goes on forever, a mortgage eventually gets paid off.
Anyway, the first part of this was directed to you, but the rest is more general in nature. I hope that everyone will try to be a little patient with the President. I think he is a good man and has the best interests of the country at heart, and although I don't agree with some of the things he has done, he has done a lot of good things for us, and has probably prevented lots of bad, and I don't think we can call any of his policies failures yet, given that none of them have really been in place long enough.
Just my 2 cents,
O2

You obviously haven't been paying any attention to Rush's show or to the numerous threads here discussing his show. He's been brutal to Bush.
So much for your theory.

Yes I have and what is your point? Throughout history (including in the 1960s), all welfare programs have been sold on the grounds that they "will make people independent." You don't actually take those claims seriously, do you?

Absolutely pathetic. You should be embarrassed. he should be, but he won't be ;)

Bad policy. No sale. Time to start using the long tax form folks. (Donate to the Salvation Army for more tax write offs.)

Seriously, what is the opposition if it isn't related to minorities? These are loans and tax credits. The only difference between this and the current system is that it will reduce the down-payments so that MORE AMERICANS will be able to OWN THEIR OWN HOMES. Or should we prefer that American individuals remain on federal housing or welfare and forget about private property ownership?

You cite Registered as saying:
Caption Bush as he gives 5.5 million minority families a home of their own with your tax dollars! President George W. Bush waves to the crowd before being introduced by U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Mel Martinez (R), at the St. Paul AME Church while in Atlanta, Georgia, June 17, 2002. Bush outlined plans to use loans and tax credits to boost the number of minority homeowners by 5.5 million before 2010. (Larry Downing/Reuters)
BUSH: "I'll be right with you Mel, I'm just saying goodbye to my Conservative Base"
Not one of these justifies what you said:
You're against private home ownership unless it's private home ownership of a white, high-income person,
Your comment to registered is still not supported by anything, was still a personal attack, and was still reprehensible.
Funny how there is no mention here of how this plan is for low-income folks, which will benefit minorities, as well as whites. Yes, Bush has commented on boosting minority homeownership, but I see no exclusion of whites in his comments.
Like this?
I introduced two of the leaders here today -- they call those people Fannie May and Freddie Mac, as well as the federal home loan banks, will increase their commitment to minority markets by more than $440 billion. (Applause.) This means they will purchase more loans made by banks after Americans, Hispanics and other minorities, which will encourage homeownership.
The Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation will dramatically expand financial and home buyer education efforts to 380,000 minority families.
No, he doesnt say non-minorities are excluded, he just says the benefits are going to minorities and minority markets.

BUSH: "I'll be right with you Mel, I'm just saying hello to the intelligent members of my Conservative Base who understand that if we don't help these people become productive members of society by establishing HOMES for their families, then we will be paying out the butt for them on a much larger scale later on."

Walter E. Williams said that Rush will be off tomorrow ... I forget the name of the one filling in for him; someone who writes for The Washington Times, I think.
I am waiting to hear what Michael Savage has to say! Wow! I can imagine!!

I don't think we can call any of his policies failures yet, given that none of them have really been in place long enough. If they fail? How much will that cost us?
During the Clinton administration, there was a survey about home computers. Gore wanted a computer in every home.
The study showed Blacks make just as much as whites, but they spend their money on entertainment, while whites used theirs for long term goals.
So, while they're being entertained, we'll buy their house for them. Sure, that should get them to change their ways , aye? -- NOT!
To: concerned about politics
On Monday, Bush was laying out a vision of ways to help black and Hispanic families obtain their own homes by eliminating or easing the barriers now keeping many out of the housing market That isn't from the proposal and it doesn't say that whites will be excluded. Thanks for trying though.

Why can't blacks and hispanics buy their own houses? They get the college scholarships first - affermative action. They get the jobs first - racial quotas. I'll add the question why can't they buy their own homes when they've been getting these AA firsts, and all the other "we have to level the playing field" deals for DECADES now?? Just what the heck is holding them back still?????? Just how many times do they get to go to the well before someone finally says, "Okay, you've had your fill ... next," anyway??

You exceeded the Caption per-word rate. I can only count the first 15 words.

There are several problems with this proposal:
- Government as lender of last resort - the government is setting itself up with this proposal as a bank, except it isn't making decisions based on business sense, rather political expediency. No where do I read in your Constitution that the government can and should be empowered to do this.
- Racial tinkering - in an era where affirmative action is supposed to be out of vogue, this proposal reeks of racial quotas - indeed, this is government directly moving into race-conscious policy. The NAACP must be awfully pleased.
- Anti-English Policies - the proposal makes multi-lingual provisions. Basically you're giving these people cash and not even requiring they learn English.
- Bad social policy - basically it's open season now, if you are black or hispanic or one of the other target groups, you don't have to be responsible or thrifty like the rest of society, you can hit Uncle Sucker up for a mortgage and at favourable rates, at the expense of mostly people who do exercise sufficient care.
No conservative in good conscience can support this proposal on this basis. As I say, no sale.
Regards, Ivan

Are you incapable to thinking up any other opposition to this plan? Read the thread then, some folks object to the nanny state using our tax money to buy others homes. Others object to favoring one race over another. That is a far cry from someone who thinks only whites should own homes.
These are loans and tax credits.
Paid for by taxing the rest of us. Imagine the hilarity that ensues when Bush gets up there next week and says he is going to reduce taxes for white people, but not for minorities. Or that he will provide 440 billion in tax credits to white neighborhoods? Wheeeeee!!!!!
