I feel for the lady. Imagine the guilt she must feel. Of course, I feel for the families too, but this seems like an accident that anyone could have caused. Before anyone accuses me of being a bleeding heart liberal, I'm a stauch conservative. Have I gone off on a liberal tangent here, or am I the only one who thinks this lady deserves mercy?

I feel sorry for those who lost everything because this idiot was to stoopid to know better. She really should have known better, I mean she IS a forest service employee and ought to know far better that that.
I'd feel for her, but I can't reach. her stupidity is costing other people millions.

I don't know. If it had been a man who torched a love letter would everyone be pleading for mercy?
To: B.R. Burton
If she were a camper or someone hiking along who did this, yes, I'd feel bad. But for crying out loud, she worked for the Forestry Dept., she should have known better. Makes you wonder if she was trying to do something more than just burn the letter (I'm talking about hurting herself.)

She was foolish in her actions...from start to finish. She should have known better than to burn paper in a highly sensitive area. She should have sought help with full disclosure. Now tens of thousands of acres are burned...homes destroyed...all because of her foolish behavior.

True. And I'm not trying to minimize their loss at all, but man, imagine how guilty this person must feel - all because of a stupid accident.
Yes, she had been trained, and should have been fully open with their actions, etc.

Ah yes, Colorodo, home of the Baggins Family...

I feel sorry for me when I do stupid things too. But nobody else ever does.

Man or woman, if it's an accident, it's an accident.

I just started the Return of the King, in LOTR btw

...all because of a stupid accident. I hadn't heard that. Tell us how the letter accidentally ignited.
To: B.R. Burton
How do you know she's telling the truth? She lied once already. I'll tell you who I don't feel sorry for: the guy who bailed on this irresponsible mental case who nearly burned up half of the front range. What a shame and a waste. She had to go out into fire hazard forest to burn a letter? For crying out loud.

Love letter? Inside a campfire ring?
Either it was: a) very windy; b) a 350-page love letter; or c) soaked in gasoline. As a Forest Service employee I would think she should have known better.

"Man or woman, if it's an accident, it's an accident."She accidentally set the fire? Did she spontaneously combust or something?
She knowingly set the fire ... she may not have wanted it to spread (so it doesn't become arson), but she DID knowingly set the fire. So, it was NOT an accident.
To: PBRSTREETGANG
I don't think it was a love letter. CNN suggested that it was from her ex-husband.
To: BlueLancer
No, I mean, she didn't set fire to the forest, and intend to burn down the state of colorado. She just set fire to a letter, or something like that.

There are nurses who will make people sick merely to save them -- why not USFS employees, too? How about, "I wanted to have spotted and put out a fire."

No, she meant to burn the letter, not the state of colorado.
