(6/13/02, 4 p.m. ET) - Toby Keith was asked to perform his current bold and not-so-politically correct hit "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" on an upcoming ABC Fourth of July TV special in Salt Lake City hosted by ABC's own Peter Jennings. The deal fell through and according to Keith, it was Jennings himself who pulled the plug on the singer's performance.
He told LAUNCH: "The person with ABC who books it said, 'You're on, we want you to open the show with that song.' Fine, we made arrangements to be there. Got everything off the next day where we were doing two shows that day now, so we took the next day or two off. And Peter Jennings comes in and says that that song has lyric content that does not belong on his television network. So, I've been kicked off the special."
So what was Keith's reaction to Jennings's objection to his performing? "I think he's Canadian ain't he? So, It's our Fourth of July, not his. Tell him worry 'bout his and I won't come up there and sing at it either. But I will write him a new song."
Keith's "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" is the singer's fastest rising-single to date. It currently sits at Number 12 this week on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.
Keith wrote the song in the aftermath of the September 11 tragedies and the death of his father, who fought for the U.S. in the Army and lost his right eye.

Dude, If you are going to survive on free republic. Let me give you a tip.
DON"T GET US MAD AT YOU!!!
Wait due to 'Canadian protocol'/ A kill from 2,430 metres canada sniper team in Afghanistan
The United States wants to give two teams of Canadian snipers the Bronze Star, a decoration for bravery, for their work in rooting out Taliban and al-Qaeda holdouts in eastern Afghanistan, but Canadian defence officials put the medals on hold....
When he hit his first target, an enemy gunman at a distance of 1,700 metres, he said all that ran through his mind was locating his next target. "All I thought of was Sept. 11th and all those people who didn't have a chance and the American reporter who was taken hostage, murdered and his wife getting the videotape of the execution; that is my justification."
Of course, he has always cleaved off what didn't fit his agenda or worldview. Of course, he would defend anyone else's right to free speech as long as that speech was anti-American or immoral or lewd and lacivious. But, Lord foribd that it be a song that is pro-American and talks about kicking some terrorist a$$.
Hey, Peter Jihad! Why don't you just suck a rotten egg (or Hanan Ashrawi; I am sure that her eggs are rotten)?
Course I would not wish that on the Canadians either!!!
What Peter J does not understand is NOBODY cares what he thinks. I really wish I worked for ABC or Disney and could put an end to this IDIOT's New Program.
AH!!! He just makes me so angry.
And idiots like JHawker too.
And in this case he is just the host. When did the host of a special get to decide and censor who and what was in it.
F**K ABC.
Continuing my two-year (and going strong) personal boycott of abc news...
Yes but ABC refuses to do anything about this guy. In fact the encourage it by sitting quietly by and letting him do whatever he wants.
For instance the producer of the show approached Toby to do the show but then backed down when Peter whined.
IT HAS TO END
LOLOL
F-ing A, dude...
So some folks don't dig country music, JH... Even though I practically live breath and sh!t to it, I can understand that on some level. It's what's going on underneath. Jennings proved himself to be an utter waste of skin during the 911 tragedy, and now he's getting all ape-sh!t about AMERICANS who want to honor 911 in their own patriotic fashion. This is (partly) why I have NO respect for most Canadians. FReeper Canadians being a particular exception however. Jennings is obviously not going to butt out so he needs to be butted out.
