Detroit Cup City
After a dominating season, Detroit stands tall above them all. The Red Wings took home the Stanley Cup by defeating Carolina 3-1. Tomas Holmstrom and Brendan Shanahan scored in the second, and the incomprable Dominik Hasek made 16 saves. Detroit claimed its third Stanley Cup in six years and the 10th in franchise history. Scotty Bowman notched his record ninth Cup, one more than his mentor, former Montreal coach Toe Blake, and as many as any coach in any major pro sport.

now that the cup has been purchased, maybe several of those hired guns can retire.

That is the only way any team can win the Cup, to buy it. Although spending tons of money on high priced free agents may not guarantee a Stanley Cup. It is a sure fire guarantee not to win it, if they don't

The Rangers and Blues, to name two.

very true. hockey is not the only sport where this is the case. ask steinbrenner! too bad, but an economic fact of life, i suppose. i really like the grit and work ethic of hockey players. but hockey is going to have to deal with the same financial issues of other sports. hope they make the right decisions.

I do too. I heard there would be some sort of work stoppage, or lock out in 2004. Did you hear the same thing? You are right about baseball. Look at the Yankees. At least Detroit did what they had to do, they went out and bought the free agents they needed, to put them over the top. Most owners are tightwads, and will not do that, and will never win. The fans are always the ones left holding the bag.

yes. i did hear about the potential of a work stoppage. it apparently may affect the way teams draft and/or trade over the next couple of years.
