GRACE: Well Tom, I would have to agree with you. If police are searching the area with helicopters looking for this guy, that leads me to think that he's got some very important information that they want.

Tom Smart, message to the kidnapper tonight, what do you have to say?

This is a thread about a kidnapped girl. If you have issue with Mormons, take it elsewhere.

"I'm shocked and surprised about that article," Louis said. "I have no idea where that came from."

From a desire to sell lots of newspapers, perhaps?

Becoming pregnant by a family member is called "incest", not polygamy. And it's not limited to the Mormons. Sexual abuse of children goes across all socio/economic lines, as well as throughout families of various religious backgrounds.

This entire scenario makes no sense. My gut feeling is that the 15year old girl was over-protected by her parents. She wasn't even allowed on overnites at her girlfriends. She probably found a "fella" who she had to see on the sneak, and she and he ran off together.

The "abduction" was probably done to keep the 9 Yr old quiet, so they could make their exit. Questions: Why did he stop and let her get her shoes? She was wearing Pajamas, so why not "slippers" Unless she had other clothes outside waiting. Who was he? Possibly a cousin or other relative. They say she had over 70 cousins, and I think the Mormons tend to intermarry. They do have pleural wives, so they might not even KNOW for sure how they are related!!! This is much more of a teen prank that's gotten out of hand, than a criminal abduction. The house is enormous. How'd he find HER room? Up on a hill like that, it'd be nearly impossible to case it, and figure out which room she was in.

If the screen was cut from the inside, it was done by inexperienced people to make folks think there was a break-in, when possibly the door was left open, or other arrangements had been made. There were 6 siblings there all together, so how many of them had their own rooms? Any? I doubt that this is going to end like "Polly Klaus" did.

Nice try, Tom Smart mentioned Polyigamy in his talk with King, and we all know there is still a sect of Mormons that practice Polyigmay today, you know as opposed to Baptists and Methodists.

I find the statement very bizarre, it is indeed rambling, but what is all of this stuff about everybody has issues thrown in several times? Also, wonderful is not a word I would use to describe this situation would you?
Sorry, but this is one strange statement.

There are sects of people who call themselves Mormon fundamentalists who practice polygamy. Again, for the umpteenth time, if any person who belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is found to be practicing polygamy, they are excommunicated immediately. We cannot even have sympathies with those polygamy groups. And if you would like to discuss the particulars, FReep mail me, but let's take this off this thread.

Shut up. Being Mormons doesn't make them any stranger than being a Promise Keeper made John Ramsey.

They do try to do some recruiting among regular LDS members, though from what I've heard it's usually adult women they recruit, and occasionally whole families when they can convince the father to join up. However, I don't think the Smarts would be likely targets for this sort of thing. They seem to be well-established and respected in the real LDS Church, and Elizabeth sure wasn't going to have any trouble finding a nice returned missionary to marry when the time came. I think most of the recruits are misfits to begin with, feeling left out or underappreciated within the established church, and in many cases are single women whose prospects for marriage are looking bleak.

Apologies for my ignorance ... Thanks for the info. I wasn't trying to impugn the family or its reputation due to any association to any sect "Normal" or otherwise. These damn incidents are a real learning experience for all of us when they happen.

This seems like an awfully high profile way of hiding a pregnant teenager for a few months. Don't you think they would have found it easier, and much less risky for exposure of their incestuous habits, to tell people she'd gone to visit friends in another state for the summer? And they surely could have waited a couple more days 'til she had her middle school graduation, to further avoid suspicion. Nope, I think you're off the scent here.

No official source has asked for the sketch because the uncle said no from the beginning. The guy gives me the creeps. I told my husband that there was something weird about the way the uncle was evading answering questions the first day (before his brother collapsed). I don't care if it is traditional for the older brother to speak for the whole family, it's weird. It's also weird that the girls didn't call out for their father. And, the weirdest thing is that statement on Larry King about issues and a wonderful story. ---This is not a wonderful story.

The uncle makes it sound as though he knows who has the girl and thinks that he needs to appease the man. If this is the case, the uncle is the wrong guy to do it. The uncle has made such a mess of things that the family should hire a professional pr guy and a detective and put a muzzle on the uncle.

Interesting how many people on this thread reference films rather than real life experience--and I'm going to do it, too. In cases like this, I always remember that Meryl Streep "The dingo ate my baby" movie

Hey, why do you have to reference a film to make your point? I'm sure you can recall a lot of personal incidents where you knew people whose babies were eaten by dingoes. Why rely on film?
