Utah Man Sought in Missing Girl Case

By RICH VOSEPKA
Associated Press Writer
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — More than a week after 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart disappeared, police said Wednesday that they want to talk to a man they think may have information about the girl.

They are searching for Bret Michael Edmunds, 26. He is probably living in a 1997 green Saturn with Utah license plate number 266XJH, police said.

Elizabeth was reported taken at gunpoint from her million-dollar home last Wednesday between 1 a.m. to 2 a.m They were not calling Edmunds a suspect, but said they do want to talk to him. They had identified him through a partial license plate number provided by a milkman who had seen a vehicle in the area arround the time of the girl's disappearance.

Authorities said Edmunds is also wanted on two warrants — for fraud and assault on a police officer, Sgt. Fred Louis said. Police said he may have been in the area.

Tuesday, Police Chief Rick Dinse said the investigation was looking at those who had access to the neighborhood or the house, although not necessarily a family member. He said they have received some promising leads in the case.

Officials from the Utah Department of Corrections have given police a list of dozens of names of known sex offenders on probation or parole, but nearly all of them have been cleared, said Jack Ford, an agency spokesman.

I've often wondered what became of her -- she was a feisty little kid, who seemed likely to rise way above the sewer she came from.

I believe (85% sure), she's living in Eastern Long Island and getting ready to go to college.

She's one of those kids who really deserves a happy ending, I hope she gets it.

Given the tragic outcome of the Polly Klaas abduction, Mark Klaas does have much credibility in matters related to the prevention and solving of stranger abduction cases. And O'Reilly was irresponsible in having this kook on his national broadcast.....

Remember 10 year old Katie Beers

I just read an article about her. The man who sexually abused her is about to be released. I remember reading that she was in college somewhere in PA and was raised by a loving foster family in NY. I will try to remember where I read this and post a link.

Many people do not put their alarm on when they are home, just when they are gone. If you are in the house, you would have to bypass "motion", and if it was a warm evening and you have windows open, you would have to bypass those windows you have opened. Plus, if you have a dog to let out in the middle of the night, you would have to bypass that door too.

Reminds me of the star of the movie "Freeway" with the "legally blonde" (Reese Witherspoon ??) star........she put a serious hurting on the serial killer in that pic.

As to this child I pray she is alive and being kept as you stated the Beers kid was......

Stay Safe !

Klaas has no right to go on O'Reilly and imply that the uncle decision is strange. The Smart's did the right thing and Klaas needs to stay away from the family.

I concur. It's very possible that the Smart family is following the instructions of law enforcement, not to have any involvement with outside agencies/people, in regards to the investigation.

Possibly Klass is spinning away, because he's found this door closed to him.

Thanks, I'd love to see it. I remember that investigators found her copy of the Wizard of Oz with a book mark on page a hundred and something, and she'd just gotten the book a few days earlier. This from a fourth-grader who hadn't been to school in a while because she'd been sent home with lice, and not able to go back because her deadbeat "parents" wouldn't do anything about the lice. I remembered thinking at the time that with a background like this, it was a wonder she could read at all (especially when so many public school students who come from stable families and attend school school regularly can't read anywhere near their grade level, and would rather watch MTV anyway). She seemed to be making her way ahead in the world in spite of those sorry excuses for adults she lived with, and I sure hope she kept right on doing that.

The police must have pretty explicit information. Good news, I hope something pans out...

"Uh, does anyone own a million-dollar home with no security system whatsoever?"

Unfortunately, people get lax. I sure don't want to lay this on the hearts of the parents. Nor would I on a parent whose child ran out in front of a car and died.

It may have been a horrible mistake, perhaps even a fatal one to make. But we all make mistakes.

People have a right to be safe in their own homes, lets put the blame here on the right person friend. I know you're feeling the same frustration and sick to your stomach feeling I am, I just have to bite my tongue at times,..because I too am frustrated. But I remind myself that this family is going through an un-imaginable nightmare as it is. I imagine they are asking themselves the same questions. This is going to be a horrible thing to relive for the rest of their lives...... Just mho

Oh, I'm not assessing blame. I posted earlier that it is easy for me to rant because of my relatively easy circumstances.

As a lifelong Gothamite, though, I am always interested in learning how other, "normal", folks live.

Not be obtuse, but are $1 million homes common around Salt Lake? Or is theirs in an ususally rich patch?

Disagree...........Individual systems differ.

Albeit in my case my children are grown and gone to their own homes......My alarm system has a PIR system that allows my pets to roam the house but if human over 4 foot tall traverses the property then alarm sounds. My windows all have dual contact points that allow then to be in either a open (4 inches) for cool evening breeze or closed. All doors have a hinge side sensor that can not be epoxied and cut from the door like so many "crooks" do these days.

If the climate is such that the central air is on then an infrasonic system is "on" that backs up the contacts and PIR. Other sensors that look like common everyday electrical outlets do additional duty with exterior door mat pressure switches and the AIR systems around the back and front fenced in yards give advanced notice of a visit in progress.

If a home owner is willing to do the wiring and install most modern systems are easy and can even be connected to a computer that will auto dial your cellular phone with your own wave file message.

As to your comments about being off if they are home I will agree as way too many systems are installed incorrectly and thus the "false alarms" rule the time they are used.

If the system is monitored remotely or has an external "audio" alarm siren or bell they are subject to fines for disturbing the peace ect.

A good system will not do so and will have a simple strobe that will alert neighbors or LEO's that something is amiss if "seen" or keep your family from walking into a in progress breakin.

My background includes surreptitious entry work and if one does not have an active and passive system with "physical" security in depth then they are just fooling themselves into a false sense of security. Upside they die feeling safe. Downside is they are dead......or as we see in this case a child is stolen and murdered possibly.

Stay Safe !

The area the Smarts live in is one of the nicer areas of SLC. And million dollar homes aren't that uncommon here anymore, especially with the hi-tech companies that have settled here. There is more money...

I'm standing by my earlier statement that the suspect will be a carpet-layer who worked in the home. No offense to people in that industry. I just have my reasons.
