I thought smallpox had been eradicated.

That is the claim. It isn't true and if you visit WHO's website you'll see that there are plenty of "monkeypox" epidemics reported which are indistinguishable from smallpox. It all depends on the meaning of "is" erradicated.

Monkeypox isn't smallpox. It's a zoonosis. No one ever claimed to have eliminated related diseases in the wild animal kingdom (but accomplishing that would be even harder than spending years vaccinating people and isolating victims).

And it's very distinguishable from smallpox in at least one important way--the death rate (3-4%, as opposed to the much higher rate for smallpox).

That's from the WHO website you mentioned, by the way.
