Pakistan's major English-language daily newspaper has reported what it calls a "smallpox epidemic" that is "rapidly spreading" in the Pakistani province of Swabi, a development that, if true, raises grave concerns about global health and bioterrorism

If the vacccine is used in the 10% of the world where it's a problem, such that there are then zero cases in the entire world, and most if not all of the spores in the wild decay for lack of hosts, then it's "eradicated" for all practical purposes.
Except, of course, for the stockpiles that we and the USSR kept, ("just in case"), and who knows where the former Soviet ones are now.
Monkeypox isn't smallpox. It's a zoonosis. No one ever claimed to have eliminated related diseases in the wild animal kingdom (but accomplishing that would be even harder than spending years vaccinating people and isolating victims).
And it's very distinguishable from smallpox in at least one important way--the death rate (3-4%, as opposed to the much higher rate for smallpox).
That's from the WHO website you mentioned, by the way.
Here are two examples of more believable stories:
1. "At least 156 people have died of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever during an outbreak that began in Uganda in September 2000."
2. "India warns of malaria epidemic, 73 dead."
Don't be a smarty pants if you don't know what you are talking about. Smallpox has no animal vectors. It was only a human infection. During the WHO eradication plan, all reported cases were "ringed" in by vaccinating the population of the region. This combined with quarantine did eradicate all "wild" smallpox. The CDC never claimed to have killed it all. Everyone in the medical community has known of its storage in the USSR and US military labs. There was even a movement ten years ago to destroy these supplies. Some "goobers" even questioned if it was right to cause the extintion of a viral species, what dorks(but I digress). Anyway, it was determined way back then that several rogue states (N. Korea and Iraq) may have secretly stashed some of the virus and for security reasons; our stockpile would be kept. The CDC was never blowing smoke about eradication. This was just an oversimplification by the press.

The WHO has in fact claimed that smallpox has been erradicated due to the vaccine.
It can't even be shown that the vaccine has had any affect whatsoever to the apparent dormency of the disease.
In Japan, during its outbreaks, the smallpox vaccine had been administered to 100% of the population. Yet epidemics were still occurring. It was only when health officials stopped vaccinating that the epidemics subsided.
Japan started compulsory vaccination against smallpox in 1872 and continued it for many years with disastrous results. Smallpox steadily increased each year and in 1892 their records showed 165,774 cases with 29,979 deaths -- all vaccinated. During the same time period Australia had no compulsory vaccination laws. The records showed only three deaths from smallpox over 15 years.In the Philippines between 1917 and 1919, the U.S. government staged a compulsory vaccination campaign which brought on the worst epidemic of smallpox in this island nation's history with 162,503 reported cases and 71,453 deaths -- all vaccinated.
Dr. Charles Nichols of Boston gave this indictment:
“In India, according to an official return presented to the British House of Commons by Viscount Morley, there have been, during 30 years, 1877 to 1906, 3,344,325 deaths from smallpox of persons presumably vaccinated, for vaccination is universally enforced in India....In each and every community where vaccination ceases and strict sanitation is substituted, smallpox disappears. There are no exceptions to this.”

A temporary increase in the number of vaccinations always takes place during an epidemic of Small-pox, or when an epidemic is feared; but an examination of the curve of vaccination does not support the statement that it checks the epidemic. On careful inspection it will be seen that on three separate occasions a considerable incease in vaccinations was followed by an increase of Small-pox. Let the reader look at the Diagram, and note that in 1863 there was a very great number of vaccinations, followed in 1864 by an increase in Small-pox mortality.Small Pox vaccinations did not diminish smallpox outbreaks in London/Wales from 1835-1864
We see that the vaccine in fact causes an increase in mortality and infection rates rather than a reduction.
