I don't know all the technicalities, but music files from cd's use mp3(and others) format rather than midi. Midi files are created differently and use a lot less storage. For instance, I can hook up my keyboard (or piano) to the computer and record the output into a midi file. A wave file is created when you actually input sound into the microphones of the computer. All three formats use different types of input devices. :)
