Bush has a golden opportunity here. Too bad he seems dedicated to blowing it by engaging in wishy washy pandering to the Palestinians and the Saudis when he should be solidly 100% behind Israel.

So if you're a Jewish voter, relax. Your arm won't fall off if you pull the Republican lever. After all, 78% of Jewish New Yorkers voted for Rudolph Giuliani, 42% voted for Rick Lazio against Hillary Clinton and 52% voted for Jewish Republican Mike Bloomberg against a Jewish Democrat, Mark Green.

Although I like Mr. Lauder, I wish he had taken a moment to explain why the NY jewish voters threw perhaps their most loyal and ferocious defender overboard at the drop of a dime.....namely Al D'Amato.

IMHO, that's an important political lesson for GWB to take note of, and remember.

If there can be "Jews for Jesus" then surely there can be "Jews for Republicans".

"Only 10% historically vote Republican"

I think this figure may represent registration or affiliation with a party but it seems low to me. As a Jew who was raised in a conservative Republican family I can relate to pressures within my community to support the Democratic party. However, I live in Central Pennsylvania and I know at least 40% of the Jews living in this region are registered Republican.

When I went to vote for President Bush in November 2000 I engaged a poll worker (who was a Jewish lady) in a conversation-- my registration had been changed to a different location since the address on my license changed & I wasn't sure where to vote. I commented in passing that my candidate needed every vote if he was to win Pennsylvania. This lady told me to go to the court house in case I needed an expidited registration. I thanked her and told her W needed every vote from Central PA since Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are Democratic strongholds. She then told me she hoped that I wouldn't find the correct polling place, thereby missing my opportunity to vote, and I was wrong to vote Republican. Needless to say I lit her up.

I have lived in New York City and the institutionalized liberal Jews there make me sick. They are the worst kind of socialist lemmings; worse than the Blacks who blindly follow Jesse "Hymietown" Jackson down the road of government funded entitlement. I could care less that Lieberman was Jewish-- he was not as competent as either Bush or Chaney when it came to Domestic policy, and now we have learned with foriegn policy as well.

I believe Jews who continue to support the Democratic party invite anihilation of our faith. The Talmud does not support the principles underpinning the planks of the Democratic party. Homosexuality, Pro-Abortion and limiting the right to defend ourselves are not part and parcell of our religion. The recent reformation in Judaism over the last century has diluted and misrepresented our identity as a culture. Liberal Jews cringe at the mentioning of "Family Values", yet it is precisely these Values which will help to preserve Judaism for our descendants.

Kinda sad that Jewish vote is predicated on support of Israel instead of GOP policies in general

I am, of course, mindful of the social concerns of many American Jews, which are at odds with the positions of the Republican Party on issues such as abortion, the environment, and taxation. But why can't Jews fight for these views within the Republican Party, not from without? The GOP has had a long history of pushing this country forward in major social struggles, from slavery to women's suffrage.

The Republican Party is no longer reliably anti-Holocaust, but pro-Holocaust Jews are going to remain with the Democratic Party, unless the Republican Party can be transformed completely into a pro-Holocaust party.

Jews are, in many ways, no different than their gentile neighbors in the northeast when it comes to liberalism on this issue. The notion of the "conservative white Catholic voter" doesn't exist anymore in NY/NJ.

Only about 10% consistently vote Republican in presidential elections.

My family and myself are part of the 10%, except when I voted libertarian against my rino senator dick lugar. My father also admits not voting republican once, by voting for Mcgovern.

The Jewish people have traditionally supported the causes that have been detrimental to them. They are notorious Democratic supporters and have now been sacrificed in the new liberal cause celebre...the Palestinian state.

It is an opportunity for both Republicans and Jewish people to find common ground but traditionalists on both sides will probably scuttle the opportunity. Too bad that politics and Political correctness will get in the way of reason and justice. Maybe that best summarizes the Jewish attitude anyway.

I have a political web-site that is growing. I find that my larest reader-base are the young Jewish Republicans. Check it out and take our weekly polls.

Only about 10% consistently vote Republican in presidential elections. As many as 36% of Jewish-Americans have, on occasion, voted Republican -- usually when Israel was the prevailing issue.

Boy, that's the kind of statistic that could make you awfully cynical.

I am, of course, mindful of the social concerns of many American Jews, which are at odds with the positions of the Republican Party on issues such as abortion

Or, to paraphrase the inimitable Ben Stein, you could say that 10% of the Hebrew population paid attention when they were told Thou shalt not kill, and the other 90% went back to worshipping the Golden Calf.

The truth of the matter is a lot worse than that, however. There are two dirty little secrets of American politics that no one likes to talk about. The first is the horrible animosity that blacks exhibit towards whites. The second is the pure, unadulterated hatred that Jews experience when confronted with Jesus Christ. So long as the Republican party is associated with Christianity, this dream of a Jewish swing to Republicanism is just a fantasy.

I can't believe Lauder wrote such a one-dimensional article. Ronald knows better. He knows damn well that Jews have voted for Republicans in the last 3 Mayoral elections in NYC.
Ronald Lauder ran for the Republican nomination for Mayor in 1989 against Giulliani and Herb London. Many people blame Rudy's loss on the damage Lauder's ads inflicted.

As for national elections, the 2000 elections were intersting. Bush won a plurality of voters under 35. This is quite good given that in the Jewish community, Gore was irrelevent in what became a Bush-Leiberman race.
