Explosive device found at bridge-tunnel The Virginian-Pilot © June 6, 2002
NORFOLK -- A small explosive device was found this morning inside a ventilation building near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.
Details about the device were not immediately available, but police said it was not large enough to have caused damage to the tunnel.
An employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation discovered the device between 8 and 8:30 a.m. today. A State Police bomb squad "rendered the device safe," a police spokesman said.
The bomb has been disarmed and does not pose any danger, police said.
More details will be reported as they become available.
No one was injured by the device and traffic through the tunnel was never stopped.
The investigation of the incident is continuing. Police said they have no suspects.
Small device? In a ventilation building? You damage the equipment so that it quits, then stall traffic somehow. Next step, Cyanide or Ricin. Or even a suicide van inside the tunnel. Pop the tunnel's cap, and flood it, panic would be instantaneous and people would be very frightened indeed. Just what the Terr's want. So we can't be frightened and can't change our activities, because they'd win. But if we don't change something, they win anyway because we make it easy for them to do so. This makes me wonder what is being plotted for our mal-enjoyment.
That analogy would work if either Tim McVeigh or muslims would accept the same God Christians do. The various political parties all accept one country.
There is no way a muslim or Tim McVeigh would accept Jesus as God. But all political parties accept the US constitution.

I think they made it free in the early 70's? From what some guys told me who had been there longer. Hampton Roads Operations Area is the most vital military sea port on the east coast. It should have the USMC's finest & a stepped up USCG doing boat patrols of her waters as this is indeed a natioanal security interest area. I would go as far to say in this case outside perimeter security for the tunnel be handled by the military. I don't mean car searches ect I mean to watch for unwanteds approaching from the water.
For those who don't know this area it's getting too blame close for comfort.
Just sightseeing I guess.
Heck the refinery fire that we had here in Denver a decade or so ago took a whole month to put out. And it was done by those guys from down Texas way. Now imagine 23 sites.

If I remember right, great thought WAS used at the time of the design. The Bay Bridge is like 20 miles long. The bridge portions, while relatively short in themselves, handle incredible shock energy from wind and sea. It is incredibly strong. Even so, the bridge is frequently shut down because that energy is translated into vibration of the bridge structure, which throws large, top heavy vehicles all over.
The Bay Bridge itself services traffic from nearly the entire Eastern seaboard of the United States. New England, NYC, Philly, Wilmington, Ocean City...route 13 is the only route for the residents of many areas to travel back and forth.
When I needed to get to DC I didn't use the bay-bridge...I had a route less traveled and I didn't have to pay the toll. Made better time for less money....but most people ust the bay bridge tunnel for the convenience.
All but one is toll-free. (Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel 22 miles to the Eastern Shore).
In 1952 these were all different ferry systems.
They use ferries or tunnels so an attack or sabateur will not drop the bridge span across a channel locking five carrier groups in the harbor.

Okers. Is there a good back up just in case? Here in New York, there really isn't a back up.. called pray and kiss backside unless your luck holds.
