More U.S. bashing from overseas on our foriegn policy and how it relates to the World Cup Tourney.
I think Andrew Sullivan somewhat agrees.
Yes, it is just "football". No prefix. It is not "clearly derivative" (from soccer) either as a few minutes of web searching shows. If it was derived from anything, it would be Rugby anyway. And yes, even though one of the world cup sites is Kobe, I am going to show my American-ness and ignore it (except to defend Football, go Dolphins!).
A history of soccer (Argentina, English). A history of football.
It's from a British publication, so I would guess that's pounds, not lira. Italian lira has been replaced by the Euro, but the currency converter says that 18,000 lira is about $8.75. For a 90 minute game, I guess that would be about minimum wage. :-)

Here's how to shock a European. When they start ranting about why isn't soccer so popular in America ask them to consider what would happen if it was. Look at hockey. North American teams are taking most of the good players from Russia. If soccer became a national pastime here, multi million dollar salaries would drain most of Europe's talent pool. The European clubs couldn't compete against America for prime players, the money isn't there. Worldwide soccer would be ruined as national heros would leave their teams for the big bucks.
True...
How about those cutsy little shorty-short outfits and those garish colors that the guys wear? And there is no such thing as a "soccer-swagger", in those outfits, is there? No sticks, bats, or flexing any guns either...
Any men here at FR willing to admit they're betting on, or asking friends to "come over and watch World Cup soccer"?
What is up with you people anyways? To each their own. Baseball is boring as hell to me, but others like it. To each their own. The US is playing portugal in 2 and a half hours as I type, and I am going to be rooting hard.
Speaking of salaries in soccer, the top players earn over $100,000 a week plying their trade in Europe.
Rupert Murdoch bought the Dodgers for around $300 million, but got turned down when he offered $1,000,000,000 for top English side Manchester United. It is a money sport.
I genuinely think that the big problem americans have with soccer is that we are not yet the best.
Who here gives a rip about competitive cycling? If Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong didn't win the tour de france, we wouldn't care, but they do, so we do care.
It is the difference between being a cubs fan or a yankees fan. I love soccer, I love my country, I love my national men's soccer team.
Pity so many Freepers have such a low opinion of the BEST game in the world:-)
I don't like soccer.
Yet, after my friend called and woke me up at 2-0, I leaped from my chair after the third goal.
USA USA USA
Too bad the times are so screwy.
Hope you're enjoying :-)
