PC killed the movie version of "Red October" as well. I "discovered" THFRO from an item in the Washington Post in 1985, when it was still a word of mouth best seller. It was taut, subtle, insightful, with vidid characters and a compelling plot. The movie refused to portray the Lithuanian Captian's resentment of the brutal Soviet regime.

Don't forget the thrilling end, where a soviet Alpha-class submarine manages to "sneak up" on eveyone. Despite their titanium hull and technological innovations, they're the loudest things in the ocean

I didn't find it moderately entertaining. As a matter of fact, I found it about as "entertaining" as a reverse vasectomy.

Great minds think alike!!

My wife and I just came back from that horrendous movie, and I took those same words right out of your mouth.

Speaking of what's considered acceptable, did anyone else notice that the blow up at the stadium couldn't have been accomplished without those terrible SMOKERS?

I too just came from seeing Sum of All Fears. They just cannot make good movies anymore. The stupid one liners were sooo predictable and not funny. I could go on and on too but I won't.

Well ... you can get editorial control, but you have to have it written into the contract. Not many writers are strong enough to get that kind of contract. But ... some DO!

Yeah! That was a good bombing and I didn't associate it with a negative message on smoking. Actually, the punishment of the terrorists portion of the movie exihibited more realism and quality than the nuclear blast.

Too bad you did not catch my post about it. Could have extra cash in your pocket this morning for something a hell of a lot better.

All his stuff is fiction. Did you think any of it is "real"? How could it be?

I missed the smoking dangers too - good pick-up!

One thing though too: the realism of the balst.

I am no expert on low yield nukes, but don't we have tactical nukes for the battlefield that are not supposed to be horrendously radiactive? And what about the dirty bomb that was supposed ot go off in NYC harbor several months back (remember the scare?)?

I may be wrong but low yield or crude devices won't always be as destructive as you think - I bet the blast in SUm was pretty true. (Now I know it is a movie!)

What is so bad about Israeli planes with nukes. The USAF lost a nuke off Charleston. Besides, the book makes it clear that this was an accident in war. In 1973, only one Brigade held the Syrian Army from crossing into Israel. Things were desperate. Supposedly Israeli had nuclear weapons loaded. That is the basis for the events.

In the movie, the plane is shot down over the Sinai. I thought that was strange, because the Israelis still controlled Sinai after that war and could have searched for the bomb.

I did not read the book but just watched the movie this weekend( a friend loaned me the DVD). I liked the movie but now I see what all the fuss was about.
